The Age of Expansion: The Mexico City Kings

With the '67 VHLM season soon approaching, a new team from the South has arrived, and with it, a glut of questions surrounding their viability in today's modern high-scoring game. Built on a combination of high-talent veterans, young players looking to earn their place, and the leadership of a league legend in Nykonax, the Mexico City Kings are looking to leave their mark on the league straight out of the gate.

The Core

The team lives and breathes around the success of its elite Right Winger, Aleksander Rodriguez. While putting up impressive offensive numbers in the '65 VHLM season, the young latino finished with a staggering minus twenty three +/-. The team has added rookie defenseman Derek England and sophomore Guillaume Fontenette to make up for these lapses, but it remains to be seen if this glass cannon of a player can lead his team to victory.

Fontenette is expected to continue on the first-line powerplay, the frenchman's unparalleled passing ability has continued to refine over the past season, as has his overall game. Fontenette will be asked to carry big minutes in the upcoming season, and has the opportunity to secure a high draft position if his acceleration continues.

Centering tohe Rodriguez line is veteran Center Eeli Harju. Praised in his first year as a defensively responsible forward, Harju is able to skate the puck and open up ice for his triggermen to drift into sneaky areas and finish the job. The Finn also plays with an edge, racking up 58 penalty minutes in his first 72 games, and is expected to be under close scrutiny by his coaching staff, who have been more than clear that they're unhappy with the number of penalties their players have taken in previous seasons.

The New Blood

The aformentioend Derek England has shown to be a more than competent defensive defenseman, having drawn comparisons to Chris Tanev, but with a slightly higher offensive upside. When not shutting down rushes, England is known for his outlet passes and limited but impressive work as a powerplay quarterback.

Also new to the team and league is Easton Sterling, a large and in charge all-around winger who is expected to see middle-six minutes.

The newly acquired Wrike Chyrnoble is expected to start in net. Just as known for his radioactive personality than his on-ice efforts, Chyrnoble is already projected to be drafted high in his elegible VHL draft year. Boasting high save percentages in all areas, and coming from a wealthy family based on his history of donations to the league, the Kings' netminder looks to be a solid piece for the upcoming season.

Rounding out the rookie class is Henrik Zoiderberg. Known as the Cretin from Sweden, this young man is expected to play the left wing to mirror Rodriguez, using his premeire passing and playmaking abilities to feed the latin triggerman. It's Swedish meets Latin, like a fermented fish taco, and a combination twice as spicy.

The Conclusion

The Mexico City Kings are going to be an exciting young team to watch in the upcoming season, but do have a number of consistency issues to be addressed if they're expected to make a playoff run.  Stay tuned for regular updates as the season progresses.
