Well...do we?

I've been absent from the league for a while, and checked out for even longer than that, but it seems like the VHLM is getting a little more respect...kind of.  Perhaps a better way to put it is that the VHLM players are getting helped out, but the VHLM as a whole is still painfully irrelevant.

Still, the league does seem to have a lot more going for it as a league (as opposed to a collective of prospects and washouts) than it did fifteen-plus seasons ago.  It has its own magazine, which is something new to me.  It expanded when the VHL did, which isn't new to me but I still found to be a sign of respect to the league as an entity (either that, or it had to expand due to STHS constraints, I have no idea).

The players, however, are getting just as good a deal as the league is as a whole.  There’s a VHLM training camp now, which should help the newer players immensely, and the VHLM has its own Fantasy Zone where the younger players can earn TPE through their knowledge of the league.  The VHLM Fantasy Zone isn’t open to VHL players, which is a good thing since that would defeat the purpose of giving the young guys an advantage but limits its effectiveness as a “marketing tool.”

We should get back to my original question, however.  Do we care about the VHLM as a league?  No?  Well, why not?  It’s pretty damn important to the survival of the VHL, given that every new member is going to spend at least a season (more likely two or three, unless that’s changed) playing in it, and even the older players cycle through every calendar year or so.  On top of that, it’s a great learning ground for future GMs to get their feet wet with the STHS system and managing a team in general, and the closer that experience can be to the VHL the better.

On the other hand, maybe we do care about the VHLM.  Maybe the fact that it has its own magazine and fantasy games are a sign that the league is getting some of the respect it lacked for so long.  Of course, appearances don’t make up for the fact that nobody joins the league to be a minor league lifer, and the best VHLM careers are the products of inactivity from members who probably showed a level of promise at one point…just not enough to make it to the bigs.

I honestly forgot the point I was trying to make with this piece, and it hits me that that probably answers my question.  I currently have a VHLM player, and he’ll probably be sticking around there for at least another season.  Do I care about the VHLM?  A little bit, but not enough to want to become a fixture there.  I’m enjoying the locker room, but an active locker room is enjoyable in both leagues.  I feel a level of investment in my team, even more than the point where it affects my player growth, but I doubt I’ll be paying much attention when I move to the VHL.  I won’t be able to play the VHLM Fantasy Zone games and the VHLM magazine won’t have anything to say about me or the team I’m on.  I can only care so much about an entity that doesn’t concern me, but for the sake of the league as a whole I’ll be glad that there is a stronger focus on it for those who are there.

And that’s all I have to say about that.

I think what we all care about (or maybe should) while in the VHLM is not the VHLM - but what our draft stock is. Both time I've created a player, I fully enjoy my first season, I'm drafted, stay in the VHLM the second year and that's when the VHLM loses my interest, because I'm not playing for my own draft anymore.

I finally won a Founder's Cup with Villeneuve (ofc while I was inactive) so... what else is there? I agree with Molholt. It was always more about my draft stock and seeing if I could be picked ahead of Sterling and Knight.

609 words. This was just great. I love these kinds of Media Spots and the personal reflection it carries. I think the VHLM has evolved immensely since it's infancy stage and with featured logos, their own forum and all that other stuff you wrote about, the VHLM may not be the main focus (it's not supposed to right?), but it does what it needs to and because of that, it carries it's own attention when called upon.
