A Grizzly Scenario: Seattle Bears on the Expansion Draft

 

A golden age of hockey is upon us, and the Victory Hockey League is expanding again. The league has never been this competitive, and has a bright future ahead of it. While we wait to hear the details and specifics of the new teams we're going to be meeting, many journalists and players are running wild with speculation, mainly regarding the upcoming Expansion Draft. Only so many players can be protected, so it has the potential to change teams almost completely as General Managers will scramble to protect their core players.

 

No team is likely to be more affected by the Expansion Draft than the Seattle Bears. We knew they were close, but to confirm, we caught up with some of the Bears together their thoughts on the upcoming expansion. Bears D-man Hulk Hogan was simple, straight and to the point. "I'll show you MY Expansion," says Hogan. We're not sure what he's talking about. Is he privy to super secret information? Check back with us when we explore Hulk Hogan's very large Expansion.

Bears prospect Berocka Sundqvist also had something to say. "I think the Expansion will be interesting to see who grabs who," says Sundqvist. "It could possibly lead to some intense rivalries between previous team mates." Sundqvist isn't wrong. The Bears started this season as a rebuilding season, and is shaping up to be deadly in the future. The locker room has become increasingly close and friendly with one another, but having some of the players taken away in the Expansion Draft will change a lot of the attitude of the Bears. 

 

Center and top goal scorer on the Bears as of this writing, Scott Greene, also had a few words to say. "It's going to be kind of sad, to be honest. We have completely rebuilt this locker room from the ground up, and we have a really strong bond with each other. I simply can't imagine playing against some of my former Bears on another team, nor would I want to see them in a different jersey. We have a good thing going, and it's a shame that that has to change so drastically."

Some GMs and players don't think an expansion is necessary at all. While they certainly have their points, the Bears seemed to be pro-expansion. "I'm all for it," says Bears winger Henrik Zoiderberg. "(The Expansion Draft) gives new players an opportunity to break into the league and shine." Zoiderberg is right, too. The expansion draft is an opportunity to test the ability of the VHL GMs to adapt to new problems and find new lines that work, not to mention freeing up some room for the stars of tomorrow. "It lets GMs try out new strategies and deviate from the current meta. It's an eventuality of an ever-growing league," says Zoiderberg.

Looking at some of the players the Bears would want to protect, we can safely assume a lot of the core that was drafted in season 67 will remain. Rayz Funk, star rookie goalie and contender for Rookie of the Year, will for sure be remaining in Seattle. Maxim Kovalchuck, now the teams highest rated center and former defenseman, will likely stay, as will team captain Acyd Burn, and alternate captains Hulk Hogan and Scott Greene will likely be protected as well. Recent acquisition John Frostbeard and left winger Henrik Zoiderberg will probably stay, as both have expressed interest in remaining in Seattle. That only leaves so many slots for other stars, such as Shane Mars and Ambrose Stark, to remain. 

 

While we can only speculate here, it certainly will be an interesting draft. How many team's cores will remain untouched? How many new stars will emerge? Only time will tell.
