Most people don’t even remember what happened in the past VHLM seasons. Even fewer would remember what happened in season 65. Some might remember how Hunter Hearst Helmsley earned a crazy 125 points or how Minnesota won the Founders Cup but today I’m going to tell the story of how a goon in the VHLM earned their own ice cream flavor.

The year was 1998, a future VHL player was being born in the busy state of California. Looking back, you would have never thought that Jerry would grow up to be a hockey star. In his early years he was constantly surrounded by the thickest clouds of smoke and music that never seemed to end. A hockey career seemed miles away from the life the Garcia grew up with. But where there’s a will there’s a way. Jerry eventually made his way to Phoenix. To escape the southern heat Jerry picked up the sport of Hockey. This love of all things cold would soon lead to one of his best money making events in his life.

It turned out that Jerry Garcia was really good at hockey. Even though he picked it up late in life he ended up being drafted 36th overall by the Houston Bulls. Now I started off by calling Garcia a goon and that’s not entirely correct. It’s important to know that Jerry never fights and that season he never did. While Garcia didn’t fight he always made his presence on the ice known. During season 65 Jerry threw a whopping 238 hits which placed him 4th in the league. He also was known to play dirty racking up a total of 154 penalty minutes putting him only 5 minutes shy of 1st place that year. Even without the fighting Jerry had some goon in him and that goon physicality caught the eye of a prestigious ice cream company.

With only 33 points in season 65, Jerry Garcia was far from an all-star player. But for some reason the ice cream company Ben and Jerry’s loved his play style. Maybe it was the name? Maybe it was Garcia’s musical background. But Ben and Jerry’s loved something about Jerry and approached him with an offer he couldn’t refuse. They offered Jerry Garcia his own ice cream flavor! Now Jerry had grown up in a fairly food healthy household so he had never really developed into the ice cream world. Most of Garcia’s childhood was fueled by organic almond butter and flax seed sandwiches so Jerry wasn’t sure what kind of ice cream flavor he should make. Luckily Jerry had a favorite fruit which would pair nicely with just about all ice cream types. Jerry requested that they use cherries in his new ice cream flavor. This led to the ice cream designers at Ben and Jerry’s to produce the now famous Cherry Garcia flavor. This ice cream would become Jerry Garcia’s main income source before his break out year in season 68.

At first it seemed Ben and Jerry’s was crazy to give Garcia his own ice cream. His first season in the VHL wasn’t anything impressive. He only posted a measly 31 points that year and ended the season with a plus/minus of -10. His next year wasn’t much better with 40 points and an even worse -28. But it seems Garcia has turned things around. This year he’s already 52 points in only 65 games and his team is sitting at the top of the European conference. Ben and Jerry’s saw something in Garcia in his first VHLM season and apparently they were right. This year has shown the Jerry Garcia really does deserve his own ice cream. And a mighty tasty ice cream it is.
