They have bought themselves a first round bye. Which means that they will be able to be safe for another round. They will be facing the winner of the first round. In the first round, the Riga Reign will be facing off against the Vasteras Iron Eagles. This looks to be a promising match up as the heavily favored Riga Reign hope that they can keep the Iron Eagles at bay and get a shot at the champs. The Riga Reign made a trade deadline deal to bring in top talents like Kameron Taylor and Malcolm Spud. Bringing them in was what pushed them over the top during the regular season. Coach Mike Szatkowski wanted to be able to try and compete and he hopes that they will help a lot. Kameron Taylor is on the end of his career side. He is hoping that he will be able to capture a Continental Cup before he retires. He was one of the key cogs on the Cologne Express and was their franchise player. Malcolm Spud on the other hand, had been brought in to try and help Cologne do something in the playoffs. He did help them one season make to the playoffs but the team fizzled quickly. With them moving to the Riga, all hope was restored in the quest to win a cup. The Vasteras Iron Eagles had snuck into the playoffs due to the Titans and the Express rebuilding. Quite frankly I believe that the Iron Eagles aren't fit to win a playoff match. However, I could be surprised if they do do something and win a game or two. You can not count them out of the race, but it seems as if they do not have the talent to keep up with the Reign. Led by Keiji Toriyama, the Iron Eagles hope that a miracle will happen and they can make some noise in the playoffs. Eggly Bagelface has a hard match up on his hands and hopefully he can handle the Reign's offense. Prediction: The Riga Reign will beat the Vasteras Iron Eagles four games to one. The Riga Reign will then go on to face the HC Davos Dynamo and that game will be a nice match up to watch. I believe that the Dynamo will go on to beat the Reign four games to two. This will not get the chance to go to game seven and it will end in disappointment for the Reign and all their players. Look for Mike to make some off-season moves to try and acquire another piece or two in hopes of going back to the playoffs again next season and try to unseat the two time defending champion, HC Davos Dynamo. Nice work highlighting Mike's trade deadline wheelin and dealin, as those moves are what make Riga much better than Vasteras on paper.
