All-Time IIHF Rosters: Russia - The Near-Misses

Recommended Posts

Based on THIS roster

RW - (S48) Bogdan Podarok, TPE: 747 - I'm not sure since we don't really keep great track of VHLM trophies, but I think Podarok may have the most all-time; he collected 3 individual awards (Osborne, Higgins, and Chershenko Trophies) and two Founders Cups in S47 and S48. Regardless, the reason Podarok doesn't make Russia's all-time team is because he really only had two good seasons in the VHL, S52 and S53, in which he broke the 100-point plateau in both campaigns. Outside of those seasons, he never broke 80 points. @FacePuncher

D/RW - (S53) Roman Sokolov, TPE: 860 - Roman Sokolov was a team player, through and through; he played his entire six season career with the Toronto Legion, and he even switched positions from Defense to Forward when they asked of him. He never won an individual award in his career, only winning two Founders Cups in S51 and S52. While he was a solid player, he wasn't really remarkable enough to crack Russia's all-time roster. @Beketov

C - (S62) Vyacheslav Smirnov, TPE: 813 - The only thing keeping Vyacheslav Smirnov off the roster is his relatively short career of only 5 seasons. He was absolutely dominant in those seasons though, as his 1.41 PPG is 2nd all-time among Russian players, only behind Hall-of-Famer Alexander Beketov. Had Smirnov played a full career of 8 (or even 7) seasons, there is no doubt in my mind that he would have made the All-Time roster. @Banackock

C - (S37) Konstantin Azhishchenkov, TPE: 396 - A journeyman with an interesting name, Azhishchenkov bounced around between the Americans, Reign, and Meute in his 6-year career, only ever scoring more than a PPG once (S39). He would receive the Funk Trophy for Most Improved Player that season, but I wouldn't consider his career better than any of the forwards I selected for Team Russia.  @d3vilsfire
