Greg Eagles, the starting goalie for the Vancouver Wolves, will once again be entering a contract year in the upcoming S70 season. Just like last season, Eagles is not guaranteed a future in Vancouver after this season.

Eagles has been with Vancouver 3 seasons so far and has improved every season he has played with the team. His first season during the cup winning run Eagles played as a backup and went 6-7-3 with a .902 save % and 2.85 GAA.

In his second season and his first full year as a starter Eagles went 31-26-9 with a .902 save % and a 2.84 GAA with one shutout.

In this last season, Eagles took a significant jump and went 44-19-1 with a .916 save %, 2.3 GAA and 6 shutouts.

Most would think with the improvement each year that he would be a lock for an extension but with the emergence of Wolves goalie prospect Spyro, it is yet to be seen what management decide to do. Eagles will be commanding big $ and there just may not be enough cap space to keep both of these goalies.

@Spyro is great and I am excited to have him as a backup for the upcoming season. His great to have in the locker room and has had an amazing year in the minors but I also know in a season or two he will definitely be a contender for a starting role in the VHL so we have to see what management has planned for the both of us. I also don’t want to sound like a broken record from last year but I think everyone knows that I want to finish my career in Vancouver, will that happen? I guess right now it is too early to say “ Eagles said “ Just like last season, I will only discuss contract options in the off-season as I don’t want to have those issues distract me during the actual season. I took a cheaper one year extension for the upcoming season to help the team out with cap issues but as I enter the middle of my career I think I have to think about trying to earn as much as I can to help me out in the future when depreciation sets in”

Eagles for his first 3 seasons has always taken team friendly deals in the 2 contracts that he has signed as he always wanted to help the team and his main goal was to win multiple cups. While he is looking for a significant raise, he would be happy to take a slight hometown discount on a long term deal if management can show that they will use those savings to keep a contending team.

As of yet no negotiations have happened between Eagles and the Wolves Management. Eagles mentioned that even in his final contract year that he has not been looking at other options as he believes a deal will eventually get done.

Our writers looked at potential other teams that may have Eagles on their radar if Vancouver does not get a deal done. When doing our research the following teams may be looking for new starting goalies as their current goalies are retiring or close to retiring with no backup as of now ready to assume the starting role.

Calgary
Toronto
Helsinki
Riga

When we asked Eagles about these possible destinations he had the following to say

“ It’s great being mentioned but I think these are all rumours, I have not spoken to any of these teams and won’t speak to any teams unless I know I won’t be here in Vancouver. My main goal is to get a deal done here and retire here” Said Eagles “ The Wolves know that I want to be here and I am sure they will get the deal done. At this point in my career I just don’t want to take another short-term deal and have this uncertainty every year “
