The state of goaltending in VHL Season 71 is rather different than I'm sure most were expecting. Malmo's Michael Johnson has been far and away the league's best goalie this year, running away with the league lead in save percentage and shutouts to this point. Next up in save percentage is Greg Eagles, the longtime Vancouver Wolf that was recently traded to the Riga Reign. Following Eagles is a blast from the past, as veteran Brick Wahl is having arguably his best season for Prague in what will be his last. Raymond Bernard is right there with Wahl, but has seen a higher volume of shots. Then you have Virgil Ligriv, the veteran and longtime backup who has shined in his first opportunity to be a starter in the VHL. Smack dab in the middle is A Red Guy, who just can't seem to take that next step in his career on a disappointing New York Americans team, along with young goalie Jacques Lafontaine. Performing much worse than expected are decorated veterans Finn Davison and Rayz Funk; Davison will now have a change of scenery to deal with, following Vancouver's recent acquisition of the goalie, while Funk has shown the ability to bust out of early slumps before. Also couldn't miss shouting out Jaxx Hextall, who is doing a solid job in his rookie campaign of keeping Toronto surprisingly competitive.
