Changes to VHL/M Entry Draft? (NOT SERIOUS BUT MAYBE)

This may have been discussed before but not with me so... yay.  Just spit-balling but I enjoy the idea of this.

Amazing Idea, Vol. 3

I was thinking about the baseball live draft (yes it was yesterday, go wsox) and thought it'd be interesting to see how it could be implemented in the VHL.  The first thing that comes to mind for me is compensation in the VHL as opposed to money in MLB.  However, it would give new players the freedom to have more control over their player's early career instead of just being funneled into the minor leagues.

Players get to decide upfront if they want to go straight to the VHL and forego any bonuses and benefits associated with sticking around in the minor leagues.  This may allow new players to have longer careers, at the risk of not being given playing time by the team they are drafted.  There are (will be) certainly situations where players will ignore mentors and advice, forego the minor league systems and just simply sit on the bench on a VHL team for two seasons.  However, for those players who recreate and are already over 100 TPE, how does this not hurt their prospects as a future player?

At the expense of not declaring for the VHL up front, I would propose one of a few incentives, the first being a one-time TPE for financial bonus as compensation for not turning pro immediately.  If you think there is already too much TPE (there is) in the league, remove some of those options :P   This is obviously the crux of the issue and would have to be tweaked over the first few seasons to find a good tipping point.  You could provide this bonus in lieu of any first-gen or rookie season.  I suppose you could do the opposite and force an 'entry fee' to forego the VHLM and pay say, 50 TPE, to jump straight to the big leagues.  Althought I don't think that has ever been done before.

Some added benefits to this format, in my opinion, would be an increase in site/league traffic regarding who would/won't sign with their VHL team upon being drafted.  To be honest, the draft has long been stale and it is pretty obvious to determine who will go in the first few picks.  ALSO, I know this will be met with resistance, but I personally enjoyed the VHLM being an affiliate league the the VHL.  This format would encourage moving back into a more tiered system where VHLM teams would be provided their players at the beginning of every season (editor note: thus evaporating a useless draft IMO, get @ me).  Of course, VHLM GM's would be allowed to trade players, change lineups, pick up free agents, etc...

Now for some of the downfalls.  This would tinker with the VHLM and we all know people hate change, specifically not being able to draft their own players.  Well I liked the Kolari Panthers and they are no longer here, so deal with it.  For the old timers, this could potentially have an impact on records, hall of fame resumes, etc...  Also there is certainly the thought that a tipping point in providing players a better route through the VHLM will be hard to find, if at all.  Who's to say half of a draft class declares for the VHL and you have a flooded parent league, while the minors are led by lesser product?

I think it should be like the NHL/AHL farm system, for lack of a better word, system. Callups happen all the time in NHL, because of injuries, and maybe there should be like a preseason similar to the NHL, with prospects and regulars playing to see how NHL- ready the prospects are. Great read, @frescoelmo

VHLM teams were originally linked in that manner before we switched over to a more CHL setup. The main drawback was the minor GM’s are Pretty handcuffed with what they can do because obviously you can’t trade away a player if you are linked to a VHL team. That combined with players not really loving around much anyway since there’s no injuries or anything that would warrant a player being moved. Made us need a super complex waiver system and stuff for the sake of having a less interesting minors structure.

2 reasons this is a no from me

1. Salary Cap

2. VHLM autonomy

One is adjustable, the other is... adjustable :D
