Rules for classification of a rookie season

I could not find anywhere that specifically stated what the rules are for someone to be classified as in their rookie season in the VHL. I have made this my mission that I will try and figure out some realistic requirements of a rookie season. This should make it easier on the awards committee each season as they would have a checklist of who classifies as a rookie.

Firstly, if you are a skater and get pulled up at the beginning of a season that is your rookie season, this will focus more on goalies. Though it would apply to a skater getting called up mid-season from their VHLM team, however we do not see this happen much so it should not affect the rules.

Firstly, let us have a look at the NHL rules and see if we can apply them to the VHL.

NHL Rules:

To be considered a rookie a player:

·         Must not have played in more than 25 NHL games in any preceding seasons;

·         Nor in six or more NHL games in each of any two preceding seasons;

·         Any player at least 26 years of age (by September 15th of that season) is not considered a rookie.

We will now go through these one by one to see what we can apply and what needs to be adjusted.

Dot point 3: Age can not be applied as everyone’s age is picked and has nothing to do with skills or time spent in the league. I propose that a change of this to be anyone in their 4th career season can not be counted as a rookie.

Dot Point 2: This cannot really be applied at 6 games as a back-up goalie would need to play at least 8 games. As someone who only plays the required back up games should not be counted as someone playing in their rookie season. I would recommend changing this to 10 games. This covers two possibilities, one, a back-up goalie would play at least 8 games and the possibility he gets 2 extra starts could happen. Please note that for Goalies games is starts, not games played. A player could also get traded mid-season and be forced to play more than 8 back up games due to the rules.

Dot point 1: I think not having this dot point makes more sense only if it applies to players called up mid-season. If your player is called up from the minors and you play less than 25 VHL games than you should still be eligible to play your rookie season the next season.

Let us go through some examples.

Example 1:

Goalie gets drafted by Calgary, plays 8 back up games and gets pulled into 5 other games in the season due to the other goalie getting pulled. As the Goalie only started 8 games he is still eligible to be a rookie next season.

Example 2:

Skater gets called up in the 50th game by Toronto from Minnesota. As the skater has played less than 25 VHL games they are still eligible to be a goalie next season.

So, let me know what you think and if we should apply these rules. I think it makes the rules fairer and should not upset anyone too much.

Oh wow, I pushed hard on this back in Lafontaine's rookie season.  I dont even think I was AGM at the time. Just loved my goalie lol.

So he moved up to the VHL after the draft  and made 8 starts.  I had to fight to get him rookie status in his 2nd season. Ultimately  it was granted because a precedent was set by another goalie in the past. A goalie played 10 games in vhl then won rookie for the year the next season.

  He had a almost a good enough season in that 2nd season  for ROTY 40-22-2 and better sv%, GAA than rayz funk when he won the award 4 seasons prior.   but Defenseman Roque Davis popped off for 25 goals and like  70 pts in a very low scoring era.  Which fair enough  very deserving of the award. Not disputing that.

Damn I got side tracked lol.  Yes i think until a goalie plays over 10 games in the vhl they are a rookie. Some sort of official rule is needed. @Berocka i agree with everything you said above. Looks good
