Smarch 3,153
Another Disappointing Season In New York After a three year playoff drought the New York Americans welcomed the VHL playoffs with open arms. After a tough six game series against the Toronto Legion, many New York hockey fans were left with another bitter taste in their mouths. The Americans cruised through the regular season with relative ease before sitting back and watching the Seattle Bears and Toronto Legion battle it out in the semi-finals. The Legion made quick work of the Bears and the Americans seemed ready to take on the Toronto based club after a good week of practise. Remy LeBeau played in the match-up like a man possesed shutting down the Americans potent offense, with not one player on the Americans roster putting up more than a point per game. Fans were left wondering what went wrong for the Americans who looked destined to at least make a Continental Cup appearance. The Americans were one of the best offenses in the entire league, sitting at second in the league in goals scored with 239 goals for on the season. Odin Tordahl was the leader offensively for the Americans during the regular season with a league and team best fifty-seven goals and seventy-one assists. Tordahl was a leader on and off the ice for the team during the regular season, but even his stellar play was halted by the man between the pipes for the Legion. Tordahl managed to put up just four points in those six playoff games, but the finger can’t be pointed squarely at Tordahl for the failed playoff run this season as all but Xin Xie Xiao were held under a point per game in the post-season. With the offensive output in the regular season for the Americans can an impressive power play that was tops in the VHL at 21.88%. The power play fired on all cylinders for the Americans during the regular season, but fell off one the team started playing the meaningful games in the post-season. The team posted an abysmal 11.11 power-play percentage against the Legion, scoring just three times on the power-play on twenty-seven attempts. With the offense struggling against LeBeau in his final VHL post-season, the team was bound for an early exit. All the let downs offensively and untimely penalties could be chalked up to one thing, with that being experience. Wesley Kellinger, Tordahl and Tukio have won championship before in the VHL but other then those three the team is playoff virgins. Americans captain Conner Low had an exceptionally bad playoff series in his first VHL playoffs and that could hurt him when the team hands out letters next season. The Americans looked like the team to beat during the regular season for the most part, but as many hockey fans know anything can and will happen in the playoffs. For New York the best thing is for them to keep their chins up and head into next season with the mentality that they have a job to finish.
