Thoughts on the NHL and Insurrection - pt 1

****week ending 1/17****

The VHL playoffs are finally over. Congratulations to the Malmo Nighthawks on their championship. I doubt many people predicted them to win it all this year.

Now that that's out of the way, I want to briefly talk about my disgust with the current political climate in the United States, specifically focusing on the lack of response from NHL-related personnel. In fact, really the only thing I've heard about is support for the traitorous insurrectionists, coming from New York Rangers defenseman Tony Deangelo. This particular morally-bankrupt specimen represents some of the worst of America. While certain people can parrot talking points about unity as a country, Deangelo and his ilk have put themselves on the outskirts of reality by being members of the horribly insular social media network Parler.

That site has been in the news lately for not only digitally harboring terrorists and allowing them to coordinate planned attacks, it has also been in the news because of their downright shoddy information security, which has led to the leak of 80 terabytes of user data, including deleted posts. If by some chance you have been living in a bubble and don't know about this social media network, part of what they require to have an account is proof that you are who you say you are, in the form of your driver's license. Additionally, if you'd like advanced features, you have to provide your social security number. When the media network that you use to attempt to stage a coup also has all of your personal identifiable information, and it is not properly protected, you're going to be having a bad time.

It’s rough but we know that almost all the league is right leaning if not outright Trumpist. It makes sense - they’re rich white men who have lived in a literal bubble their entire lives who really, really don’t want to pay taxes.

Every social justice thing the league has done has been hollow and embarrassingly empty. We all know You Can Play and Hockey is for Everyone is a joke and a lie - the pride tape comes off after the warm ups, domestic violence still happens, and slurs are still caught on on-ice mic’s. The Hockey Diversity Alliance had to form outside the NHL and force the league to include them. For the league not to do anything proactively during the social turmoil of spring 2020 is so unbelievably telling.

It’s wild that the most socially-minded personality in the league is a gruff, Irish boomer in Brian Burke, but he’s the one of the few who has actually experienced diversity in his life.

It shouldn’t take LGBT players to advocate for gender and sexuality inclusion; it shouldn’t take black players to make a comment in favour of BLM; but most importantly, the world shouldn’t shit on them when they do. Athletes need to be self aware about who they are in society. This “shut up and dribble” racist mentality doesn’t exist anymore. Take a stand NHL, because in the famous words of Geddy Lee, “if you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice.”

I like hockey but honestly kinda hate the NHL.

Ah. The shut up and dribble mentality comes up again, from police. How shocking. @bigAL
