A Slow Start for Riga

The Riga Reign recently decided to go for a total rebuild and invest heavily in S75 Draft picks, knowing that if they could pick well in this draft, they could become a real force in the VHL. Unfortunately, that means, for a couple years, they might be lacking in that superstar quality for them to be that force in the league. It is an exciting time however to be around the club as most of those S75 picks have graduated to the VHL and we can get our first look at the new Riga roster.

It was always going to be a tough task for this young squad to perform well in this league, especially when they are playing in the ever so stacked European conference. So far, they haven’t won a game yet but have ran a couple teams close, they only lost by a goal to Moscow and pushed the Helsinki Titans all the way to OT. Despite running a few teams close, they have also suffered a couple heavy losses early on, they lost 8-3 to Davos and also 7-1 to the Seattle Bears. I think these kinds if results will slow down as this core of rookies learn and improve but, of course, that’s gonna take some time.

It’s definitely going to be tough year for Riga but if they can stay competitive and cause an upset or two, it could be a fun year all the same.
