Guide for World Cup General Managers

As the Season 46 World Cup Commissioner, it’s my job to make sure that the tournament runs as smoothly as possible, that the tournament itself is engaging to our users and to select General Managers to take charge of each team. If I have any regrets about how myself and Streetlight ran the Season 43 World Cup tournament, it would be that we selected a GM for Team Mercenaries that had only just joined the league and we perhaps looked over how big of a step it is from becoming a member to managing a team for the first time (especially if they’ve only been on the forum a matter of weeks). As a result, the member made numerous questionable decisions regarding team selection in the lead up to the World Cup and these were only corrected because of requests for change from both ourselves and the members in the running for a Team Mercenaries spot. That’s why this time around, I want to provide members who will be managing a team for the first time the resources from the moment they are selected, so that they can feel more confident in the role.

1 – Team Selection

Your first port of call as a World Cup General Manager will be to select the 11-12 players that you wish to use in the upcoming tournament. The positional requirements for your team are that you must select:

Six Forwards

  Four Defensemen

One or Two Goalies

To allow you to easily see who is available for your team to select, we have created a tracker that lists which players are selectable for each team, their current TPE/TPA and their current activity status. The tracker can be visited HERE

Selection Advice

  • -          You are able to play forwards at any position across the front line. So for example, you can play a center on either of the wings and vice versa.
  • -          A position change from defenseman to forward and vice versa will only be considered under extreme circumstances and must get prior approval from the World Cup Commissioner.
  • -          On the rare occasion that a team is only able to select from a group of inactive goalies under 100 TPE, they will be allowed to select a goalie who was not selected by another team.
  • -          TPE (Total Points Earned) shows how many points a member has added to his player over the course of his career. TPA (Total Points Active) shows the amount of points a player currently has. As the World Cup will utilise player’s abilities in their current state, TPA will be the better guide for you to follow with your selections as far as picking the best players available.
  • -          The three activity statuses used on the tracker are ACTIVE, SEMI-ACTIVE and INACTIVE. INACTIVE is used for a player who hasn’t been on the site or posted over the last month. ACTIVE is used for a player that has contributed regularly over the last month. SEMI-ACTIVE is used for a player that has visited the site in the last month but hasn't contributed enough to be considered active. Examples of SEMI-ACTIVE could be a player who has posted over the last month but has failed to post a point task/claim welfare and update.his player or a player who has been on the site over the last month but has posted less than three times during that period.
  • -          As a follow up to the previous point, since activity from members is what keeps this league going, you should consider selecting players who are listed as active or semi-active above those who are inactive, even if that comes at a slight cost in TPE/TPA. Selecting active members will not only reward players who have been more prominent recently in improving their players, but they will also generate more conversation in game threads and the team discussion topics.
  • -          Make sure to check each player’s individual attributes out before selecting them. While TPE/TPA are good base guides as to how good a player should be, it’s important to check how they’ve used those points in order to pick the best team available. E.g. If Edwin Encarnacion has 10 more TPE/TPA than Tom Slaughter, but Edwin Encarnacion has added 90 of his points to fighting while Slaughter has added none, then it is more likely that despite the lower TPE/TPA that Tom Slaughter will be the better player.
  • -    You do not have to select your own player for your team.

I'll continue to add to this in the lead-up to the World Cup, I'll at least be covering how to submit lines and how to generate activity and discussion as a General Manager

   2- Submitting Lines

Once you've selected the players you will be taking to the World Cup with you, the next step is to submit the lines you want to use to the World Cup Simmer, Higgins. Here is a step by step guide as to how to submit lines.

Getting The Right Tools

1) Download the STHS Client from this link. Extract the file to a place you'll remember on your computer as this is the application you'll be using to submit lines. (Note: Antivirus software may think this is a virus so its worth setting up an exemption for this type of file)

2) Open up the World Cup Index and select the first link available that is labelled "Client File". This should start a download of the Client File for the World Cup.

3) Open up the STHS Client you downloaded in step one and go to "File->Open" and select the Client file you downloaded in step two.

4) Double click on your team and then select the lines option on the right side of the tab.

You should now come to a screen that looks like this:

TQ4YE0m.png

1)  This box tells you whether your lines are valid or not. If your lines are invalid, the box will change to say "Lines are Incomplete. Why?" and upon clicking, it will tell you what the error is.

2) These arrows let you navigate through the different games on the schedule. This is handy for if you want to find a specific game where you want to utilize a different strategy.

3) The tick boxes work as filters for the box highlighted #4.

4) Use this box to highlight the player that you want to add to a line...

5) And then click the white bar of the position that you wish for the player you've selected in step 4 to insert him into the lineup. If you haven't selected a player in step 4, this removes the currently inserted player from the line.

6) These strats are used to determine how your line will play. You are given 5 points that must be distributed between the three aspects of play; Physical, Offense and Defense.

7) This slider is used to adjust how much time the line will see on the ice.

8) This shows all the lines that the player selected at step 4 is currently assigned to.

9) This shows the attributes of the player selected at step 4.

10) These tabs are used to navigate through the different situations, such as powerplays, penalty kills, etc. The others tab is where you select your starting goalie.

11) These options will automatically assign players to your lines.

12) This option will copy the lines you have used for the selected game over to all the other games.

Things To Note

The default and auto line options will likely attempt to assign computer players to fill half of your roster. Considering the gulf of talent between human and computer players this is not the best strategy.

- It is a better option to assign time% over four lines than doing 50% each on two lines.

- Remember that you cannot play forwards on defense or vice versa on any facet of the game (E.g. Not just starting, also powerplays, penalty kills, etc.)

 - If your backup goalie is a lot weaker than your starting goalie, it is an idea to make sure to check the Strategy tab for when you want your backup to replace your starter, as it usually defaults to a much earlier time than you'd probably want it to.

Sending Your Lines

1) Once you're done with your lines, click the exit button. at the bottom right of the tab.

2) Press the save to file button at the top right of the next screen. Keep a note of where it has saved your lines to.

3) Send the .shl file in an email to the World Cup simmer. The email to use should be posted in the thread with the World Cup Index
