  4. Rock Soapwart: Man Or Myth? Deep in the wilds of northern Canada lurks a beast of mythological proportions which has yet to be caught on tape or observed by any professional hockey scout. Is it a Sasquatch? The Ogopogo? No, it is the newest hot hockey prospect Rock Soapwart. Little actual fact is known about Rock Soapwart. Most information that can be gleaned has been passed through gossip and hearsay that has slowly traveled south from his hometown of Dawson City. Some people talk of a boy raised by wolves. Others speak of badly mangled goal posts, victims of his blistering shots. Others claim that he once pushed a broken down Zamboni around the local rink to resurface it. One thing all can agree on is that Soapwart is of monstrous proportions. The only known photo of Soapwart is the following taken when he was a first year Pee Wee: The few people that had ventured to play against his youth teams in Dawson City talk of a man-child who physically dominated every opponent who came his way. Stories also remark not only at his unbelievable size but also at the remarkable skill he possessed. Filling the role of a prototypical power forward, Soapwart was known for bowling over prepubescent defenders and blasting pucks by trembling goalers. To the few that were lucky enough to observe the myth in person it was clear that he had the enviable combination of size and hockey skills. But how did a hockey player with these credentials go unnoticed by the fleets of hockey scouts who will dig up prospects from Cole Harbour to Slovenia and every point in between? #1- The Yukon is not a historical hockey hotbed. Only 2 NHL players have ever came from the Yukon Territory and they weren't terribly impressive. Bryon Baltimore & Peter Sturgeon played a combined 8 games during the 1980s. #2- Dawson City is tiny. With a population of just over 1,300 Dawson City is dwarfed by nearby Whitehorse (pop. 30,000) where all Yukon hockey talent has come from previously. #3- The staff of the Yukon Rush are either lazy and/or incompetent. With a VHLM league in the area how could they not have investigated rumors of homegrown talent sprouting right under their noses. Regardless of how Rock Soapwart went unnoticed for so long the word is out now. Soapwart was picked up late in the season by the Bern Royals and he has packed his bags and moved overseas to help that club with their playoff push. Soapwart may be the biggest thing to come out of Dawson since the fabled team that challenged the Ottawa Silver Seven for the Stanley Cup in 1905. Hopefully he's more successful than that team which limped back to the Yukon after having surrendered 32 goals in just 2 games!
