Chicago Phoenix Captain Spencer Elsby is proving his case for the VHL Defenceman of the Year for S77, putting up 24points including five goals, 19 assists over the last 13 games. Fifth-year veteran defenceman, Elsby’s big month helped the Phoenix stay alive and atop the North American Conference standings, playing to a 5-5-3 record in last stretch of the season. The 6-foot-3, 160b. defender had points in twelve of his 13 outings, starting the month with registering an assist and playing the most TOI on the team in a close 4-2 loss at the hands of the DC Dragons. His biggest showing came against Riga as he scored the game winner and finished with three points (2-1–3) in a 7-4 win. Elsby registered three assists along with a plus-5 rating in a 4-2 win over Warsaw Predators. He later tacked on back-to-back two-point efforts (1-1–2) against the Los Angeles Stars against the Riga Reign.

A 23-year-old product of Espoo, Finland., Elsby is in his first season with the Phoenix after originally being drafted by the Helsinki titans in the second round (17th overall) pick back in S72 and was most recently traded in a blockbuster deal that forced the Titans to move Elsby to Chicago in a trade due to cap issues. The former Titan and Philadelphia Reaper Captain has 88 points (21-67-88) over 69 games this season and has already cruising past last year’s career-high of 32 points (10-22–32). He was a fourth round pick of the Philadelphia Reapers in the S71 VHLM Dispersal Draft.
