Laine excited for new management, believes Titans can compete despite roster changes

Recommended Posts

Helsinki, Finland - The past week has been one of a lot of turbulence for the Helsinki Titans. The week began with the unexpected departure of long time GM Julian Borwinn (@Jubo). As many goodbyes came during training camp, the search was on for a new GM to lead Helsinki to greatness. Eventually, they chose Frank Funk (@Rayzor_7), a former player who has a lot of front office experience, most notably with the Minnesota Storm of the VHLM.

With an incoming GM and a pressed salary cap, a lot of difficult decision were made before Funk took office. Pending UFA C Venus Thightrap (@BladeMaiden) was dealt to the Continental Cup Champion Seattle Bears for the 16th Overall pick in the draft, while pending UFA D James Rose (@MattyIce) was left to walk in FA due to Helsinki not having cap room. He would also sign with Seattle. Helsinki lost another big name on defense as D Emi Rune was lost to retirement. Despite as these setbacks from a season 3 games removed from a Continental Cup, Titans Superstar Patrik Laine remains optimistic that Helsinki can remain a contender for the Continental Cup.

"Jubo is definitely a loss that stings a lot. In all honesty, he was more than a coach to me. He was a mentor to me. However, I wish him the best of luck in his retirement and I'm really excited to see what Funk can do. He was a great competitor in the VHLM so I'm excited to see what he brings. I've already had a few conversations with him about things and I can't wait until he arrives in Helsinki. Really excited for what he brings to the table."

Shortly before the franchise was turned over, Jubo did some work to round out his roster. First, he went out and signed F Gary Rush to add an offensive punch in the place of Thightrap. Next, he went out and acquired D Mikeal Keef to weaken the effects of the departing James Rose. Helsinki still hasn't found a replacement for Rune, with only 3D on the roster, but the issue will likely be addressed within the next few days.

"Losing Rose, V and Em is definitely a sting to our roster, but we have opportunities to fill those holes with Rush, Keef and another defenseman coming in. It won't be easy of course, but this team strikes me as a group that will give 110% every night. It's what we've got and we gotta learn to fight with it."
