Allow us here at VHL.com Scouting, to present a somewhat brief report on Hammar Voss. We had the pleasure of preparing this report while in Miami to look at some of their prospects working out prior to the VHLM draft, scheduled for the next few days. What follows is merely our opinion and GM's should not base their drafting decisions on the following commentary.

Hammar Voss' skating ability is at a very high level, which will only improve with the proper development and coaching. He features excellent speed and acceleration both forwards and backwards, great pivots, excellent lateral agility, and fantastic edgework. The great skating gives him outstanding mobility allowing him to always be in position defensively, and to join the play offensively and still be able to recover back to his position. He covers a ton of ice, and it is very difficult to beat Voss one-on-one.

Offensively, Voss shows confidence and poise with the puck on his stick, and is really developing into a solid two-way defenseman. His offensive game is keyed by smart decision making and developing passing skills, although they may be wasted in such a meta environment like the VHL.  His shot is very hard, but what really makes it an effective weapon is his ability to find the openings to get it through to the net. With such a heavy shot, even his rebounds lead to secondary opportunities for his teammates. His agility and edgework allow him to walk the line and open up shooting and passing lanes.

Defensively, Hammars mobility keeps him in position to make plays, and helps him to cut down passing and shooting lanes.  He is a smart defenseman who anticipates the play well and he works hard in the corners, and is willing to battle in front of the net. In terms of talent he could develop into a top 4 defenseman capable of playing all situations and being a weapon on the powerplay. That may seem like a high estimate based solely on 11 VHLM games and one Miami training session, but we truly believe that Voss possesses the skillset and talent to be a VHL weapon.

PROS:

Skating :  Voss has an incredible stride, and can really take advantage of situations where a forward may over commit. He can go end to end, which is a novelty for someone who stands 6'8 and it's thought that he will continue to develop and become even better.

Shot When Voss takes a shot, he really takes it. He possesses an absolute cannon and once he develops the accuracy to go with it, he will be a devastating weapon for his team.

CONS:

Confidence :  Hammar needs to be more assertive with the puck and make faster decisions whether to pass or keep the puck. Sometimes he is unsure and that hesitation can cost his team a scoring opportunity.

Mental Strength : Voss undoubtedly has a high hockey IQ but questions remain over his ability to cope with elite talent opposition on a regular basis. Most GM's think he can, but will need the right coaches around him to continue to develop and rid him of the few faults he currently has.
