Analysis of VHLM Team Names Part 2: Las Vegas and Mexico City

Hello, my friends. I am back to continue my weekly series series which seek to understand the logic behind the names of VHLM teams and if they work or not. Last week we looked at Halifax and Houston and look at the different between traditional and untraditional team names. Today we will checking out the team names for the cities of Las Vegas and Mexico City and the importance of clear references to a team name. My analysis machine is all fired up so let's begin

It is rare to find a team name that has a double meaning in which both meanings reference a important part of the the home city. The Las Vegas Aces is one such team name as "Ace" can refer to two different things important to the Las Vegas area.  We can see the clear reference to the ace card, the highest valued card in many modern card games including those used for gambling in casinos. Gambling halls and casinos help make Las Vegas the city it is today so that reference works well. An "Ace" can also mean a skilled military pilot. It just so happen one of the Air Force's most important bases in the United States, Nellis Air Force Base, is right next to Las Vegas. This is a great way to show respect to the local military community. Both references together create the image of a risk taking adventurer who claims victory, which is a good image for a hockey team. Both the team name and the new logo are some of the best in the VHLM in my opinion.

Not ever team name can have two or even one good reference. Take the Mexico City Kings for example. I get that they were trying to reference the great leaders of Mexico's past. However there is a problem that bugs me. While there have been kings of Mexico, the leaders of this region everyone knows never claimed the title of king. They were emperors. As someone who believed that team names should have precise and clear references, this bothers me more than it should. Kings and emperors are not the same and that should be understood. It just feels like a lazy and haphazardously chosen team name to me. Perhaps this team should rebrand into something better fitting Mexico than just kings. It is an ok team name with better options available if we look for them.

That is all the analysis and opinions I have for today. No matter references there are in a team name, they all should be clear and not connected to vague concepts loosely connected to the home city. Please don't take my criticisms personally as I do not seek to attack only to question. Come back next week as I seek to have my questions about two more VHLM team names answered. We will meet other then but for now I say goodbye.

I looked at the logo before writing. It fuses both elements of of "ace" very well.

Yeah that was honestly the most creative idea I ever had, to get the ace of spades within the fighter jet silhouette, and then we added the diamond and poker chip around it. Fortunately Sonnet was a Las Vegas native so he also really loved the very specific references to Vegas history and culture.

Well written and conveys your opinion well. I would personally would of liked to see a bit better formatting. Include the team name in Bold as a heading of the paragraph and include a picture of the logo in your article as well. This will help readers know what you are talking about without them having to go elsewhere. Another point I noticed is that you seem to had to try and pad your word count at the end to make it a Media Spot length. If you are going to continue this your words could follow this structure (Intro 50 words, Team one intro 25 words, team one logo: 50 words, team one name: 50 words, team one suggestions for alternate team name or logo design: 50 words team one conclusion 25 words, do the same for team 2 and 50 word conclusion.) Overall great article and I can't wait to see more. 8/10

Okay, wow. This is so well written i fell right into it from the start. As a canadien I didn't know about the vegas military base. It's a nice touch to give tribute to those who fight for all of us and i bet there's a couple of guys in the forces either Canada, US or anywhere else around the globe. As for mexico well i understand your point Kings does not fit for mexico, it's also great they did not went with something too harsh and stereotypical that could be insulting to some. Very nice topic it's the 1st article of that type I read and the first of your articles i read too. So 10/10, im looking foward to the next ones.

Very well written, I always enjoy reading the articles, fun and exciting, always. I find the double meaning of Las Vegas fascinating, love it! I could not find and grammatical, or spelling errors, which shows care in the article, however, I would suggest subtitling the different paragraphs for an article like this, it makes it a bit easier to read. All in all, it’s a good read, good job, I’m excited to see what else you come up with! 9/10
