Boychuk and the Wranglers, Yet Another Article

We are getting into the final quarter of the 39th season in the VHL, and with that we have seen many surprises. The best in the league are well known by now while the lesser teams have been figured out as well. The up and coming Wranglers are starting to finally find their way with consistency. With young studs coming through the fold, and some trades things are looking up.

Only mere seasons ago, the Wranglers were a bottom dweller. They struggled to find any kind of ground for a long time, and people began to get used to it. For the few seasons, they have picked up some big pieces in rebuilding their team. They have a great goaltender, a strong anchor on offense and some key defenders. These are the type of things they will need to make it to the top.

This season, the Wranglers have made some deals that are very interesting to look at. They acquired a great defender in Edwin Encarnacion, who should be quite the mainstay on the blue line. He has already impressed in Calgary and found chemistry. To balance out the offense much more, Giygas and Jamie Shetler made their way into the Wranglers organization as well.

Giygas' play making abilities are more than welcome on the team and he has shown he can bring it when needed as well. He has 53 points in 54 games, 44 of those being in the assist category. Giygas and Shetler have connected in a big way. When things get slow for the top line, the 2nd line is more than accounted for. Bringing Giygas into Calgary has balanced out the center position superbly and taken a good load of pressure off of star centerman Boychuk.

Another acquisition which has been great so far is right winger Jamie Shetler. He has 26 points in 33 games with the club bringing with him 13 goals and assists. Shetler brings a very balanced game to the ice and seems to find chemistry with whoever is out with him. He scores clutch goals and dishes the puck well. Jamie is no superstar, but he is very consistent. That kind of production is what any coach would ask for.

Then comes Edwin Encarnacion, who has become a fan favourite in Calgary. Coming over from Cologne, he was playing a solid game but wasn't performing the way he wanted. As soon as he came over to Calgary, he was one of Calgary's top defenseman and has performed amazingly. Encarnacion has 45 points in 33 games with the Wranglers and has paid off huge. With his superb scoring and passing abilities the blue line is quarterbacked by a superstar. Calgary knows they have a man they can rely on when needed and be a mentor.

Travis Boychuk is someone else to note as well. Many were not sure of his trophy winning rookie season last year and if it would be repeated. The star of the Wranglers answered that question with another great season so far and has continued to have ridiculous chemistry with line mates Tremblay and Mikhailovich. Boychuk has 32 goals and 42 assists in 54 games sitting in 8th for league scoring. We will see what happens towards the end of the season if he can get up to what he had in Season 38 or not.

Recently, the Wranglers were on a 6 game winning streak which was the best in the VHL but was stopped by Davos losing 4-2. Calgary is a positive 27-26-1 and currently sitting in a playoff spot. They look to keep in that position in this final part of the season and see what happens in the playoffs. Everyone knows that anything can happen in the playoffs.
