Harumpf 313
Top 5 in VHL History Most Assists in a Season Patrick Bergvist looks up ice during his 114 assist season. As someone who is a budding playmaker in the VHLM, I thought it would be interesting to take a look at the top 5 seasons for assists in the VHL. This article is for the VHL History Doubles Week Point Task. I'm new to the league so had to really start from scratch here and do some digging. #1 Patrick Bergvist - D - HC Dynamo - S20: 114 Assists Bergvist comes in number one on our list as he holds the record for most assists in a season with 114. Playing defense for the HC Dynamo he was a virtual wizard with the puck. He was able to hit players in stride right on the tape no matter what the situation. He could also carry the puck and make plays off the rush and his creativity was off the charts. Bergqvist had a remarkable 40 assists on the powerplay that season and 144 total points when it was all said and done. The 114 assists is what really stands out though. That number may never be broken, especially not by a defenseman. Bergvist deserves a lot of recognition for his impressive place in the VHL record books. #2 Joey Kendrik - Calgary - S5: 112 Assists With the S5 index unavailable it's this writer being new to the league it's hard to say what position Kendrick played back then, but there's no question he was an amazing playmaker. Coming in just 2 assists behind the great Bergvist has him just off the pace of the most assists in a season. He must have had incredible vision and ability to make plays at a high speed. You don't get 112 assists unless you know how to read the ice and see things before they happen. I would have like to see Kendrick play, it must have been quite a show. One can only speculate he was one of the best playmakers ever. #3 David Walcott - D - Helsinki Titans - S26: 111 Assists Walcott was a defenseman for the Helsinki Titans and was obviously and incredible puck mover. His 111 assist season was one of the top 3 ever in the history of the league. Walcott did his damage playing over 30 minutes a game and put up a combined 145 points including 36 powerplay assists. Those are amazing numbers from any player and even more so from a defenseman. Walcott was obviously Helsinki's offensive catalyst that season and everything went through him. Season 26 was not that long ago, so many readers may remember watching him play. He may not have been able to top the great Bergvist but coming in just 3 assists behind him will not soon be forgotten. #4 Frans Spelman - D - Toronto Legion - S20: 106 Assists Yet another defenseman and also another from the S20 season. I don't know what was going on that year but it looks to be the year of the playmaking defenseman. Spelman joins Bergvist as the 2nd defenseman that season to eclipse the century mark with assists. 106 is just 8 off Bergvist's pace and while that may seem like a decent gap, it's still a ridiculous number of helpers. Spelman was obviously a phenomenal player for Toronto, he added 28 goals that season and finished with 134 points. He lead Toronto to a Division championship that season and will be remembered as one of the best playmaking D of all time. #5 - TIE - Scotty Campbell - S5 & Ryan Sullivan - S31: 101 Assists At 5th place we have a tie between Seattle's Scotty Campbell from S5 and Calgary's Ryan Sullivan from S31. We know Sullivan was a defenseman and from the trend on this list we can only assume Campbell was as well, but with the S5 index not available I may be mistaken. Regardless both players had unbelievable seasons cracking the century mark in assists. Sullivan obviously did his damage from the blue line as he helped the Wranglers win the division and finish as the #1 team in the league. Campbell must have had quite a race with our fellow S5 assist man Kendrick and I'm sure the two flip flopped numerous times throughout the season. Both Campbell and Sullivan deserve to be in the top 5 and have staked their claim in the VHL record book. Well there you have it, the top 5 seasons for assists in VHL history. I hoped you enjoyed looking back at some of these amazing players. It's important to remember the history of the league and records like these will live on forever. 775 Words.
