Game 4: S40 HoF Tourney

Welcome to Game 4 of the HoF Tourney, brought to you by VHLM This Week. Heading into this game, the New Kids hold a 2-1 lead in the best of 7 series over the Old Boys. A win here would put a real stranglehold on the series for the New Kids and put them in a great position to win the series.

 

Starting line-ups for tonight's game.

Keep an eye out on Tukka Reikkinen of the New Kids who has a whopping 10 points in the first 3 games of this series. He's been the biggest reason they hold the series lead right now.

We're back and we head down to center ice where Jenkins and Strauss line up for the draw.

 

Strauss wins it and we're off.

 

New Kids steal the puck and Koradek moves into the Old Boys zone and rips one on net. Singh gets in the way and the puck bounces off him to the side boards.

 

Schultz picks up the puck and tries to move up the ice but gets CREAMED by Ryan Sullivan and loses control of the puck.

 

Old Boys pick it up and move up. Pass to Jardy who wrists a hard one that's deflected by Higgins out of play.

Game slows down hard as we get back to back offsides.

 

The Old Boys finally test Labatte as Schultz slams a slapper right into his crest and he stops it easily.

 

Puck drops in the New Kids zone and Gerrard and Sullivan are chirping each other. Will they?

 

They will!

 

Gerrard and Sullivan drop 'em and circle off.

 

Gerrard ghost punches then they lock up.

 

Gerrard gets one in on the chin but Sullivan gets Gerrard's jersey over his head and it's all over.

 

Sullivan is just feeding Gerrard shots and the linesmen step in and break it up as Gerrard goes down.

 

Great fight in a series where tensions have been high. The fans are going wild over this spectacle, and we'll be back as they sort out the penalties.

It turns out it'll only be matching fives for fighting and no additional instigator calls, so neither side gets a powerplay.

 

The teams line up for the face-off and puck drops.

 

And we have another fight! Right off the draw Strauss and Koradek drop the gloves and go at it!

 

They get some good shots in but Strauss overpowers Koradek and gets the better shots in and gets the decision in this one.

 

Both are going to get five for fighting, and the refs have had enough of this and Koradek is getting an instigator. That'll hurt the New Kids as they lose their top line right wing for 10 minutes, on top of having to go on the penalty kill.

Puck drops in the Old Boys zone and Schultz gets pressured with the puck and he just ices it. The Old Boys will have to start over on the PP from their own end.

 

Old Boys win it and they start up. They set up in the offensive zone and start the cycle. Lots of passing but they can't get a clear shot off.

 

Over a minute through the PP and the Old Boys finally get a shot off, but Jardy's slapper is blocked by Marcellin. Fowler picks up the puck and tries a quick one but Labatte isn't going to be fooled that easily.

 

That's all the Old Boys could muster and their PP ends.

The physical play steps up as Marcellin gets knocked by Walcott, who picks up the puck but is run into by Snijider.

 

Puck rolls loose to Rybak but Walcott takes the shoulder to him!

 

Lars Berger picks it up and let's loose a slapper that Labatte gloves down and covers up.

 

We move on to 11:53 through the first where the rough stuff is still in full swing as Strauss gets run into by Marcellin and Snijider picks it up by the net and tries to put a backhand past Shaw, but he gets the blocker on it and turns it to the corner.

 

The two teams trade icings and we're at the 16:26 mark.

Rafter has it for the New Kids but he gets knocked over by Fowler. Fowler picks up the puck and unleashes a laser beam of a slapper on net!

 

But Labatte is there to get a catcher on it.

 

The Old Boys win the draw in the offensive zone and Fowler again gets a scoring chance with a snapper right off the draw, but that sails wide. Strauss picks up the rebound and shoots!

 

Labatte is there again!

 

The Old Boys are looking dangerous, but they lose the puck and the New Kids start up with it.

As time ticks down on the first, both sides are going end to end with it. We're into the last 10 seconds of the first with the Old Boys pushing hard.

 

Gerrard lets go a quick snapper, Labatte turns it aside but it goes right to Schultz who unloads a cannon into the pad of Labatte.

 

Puck bounces to Chouinard right at the side of the net and he puts the puck into the open cage with 1 second left in the first!

What an effort by the Old Boys, and a great momentum gain for them heading into the second!

 

Period ends with the score 1-0 in favour of the Old Boys. They also outshot the New Kids 10-6 in the first frame.

Goalie switch as we start the second. Kanou comes in for the Old Boys while CAL G will take over net duties for the New Kids.

 

Chershenko and Strauss line up for the draw to start the second.

 

Old Boys look to build on their lead as they move in on the New Kids zone right off the draw, but Berger's snap shot is blocked by Rafter and CAL G turns away Saeijs.

 

A lot of neutral zone trapping takes us to 5:31 through the second before we see another shot.

 

Leeroy Jenkins gets a prime chance in the slot, but his strong wrister is easily handled by Kanou and the Old Boys maintain their 1-0 lead.

This rigorous schedule seems to be taking a toll on both sides as fatigue is apparent.

 

Both sides are taking shots but can't hit the net, and the goalies are having a pretty easy night.

 

Moving ahead, we're at almost 9 minutes through when the New Kids are setting up in the Old Boys zone.

 

Rybak has the puck and wires one well wide, but it bounces back to him. He lets go a wrister!

 

He scores!

Rybak ties the game up with half of regulation left to play!

After the goal, both sides go back to not being able to hit the broad side of a barn.

 

10:43 and Daniel Braxton is a little overzealous and gets called for interference.

 

11:19 through and Berger wins the draw back to Brekkar. Brekkar passes back to Berger. Berger shoots!

 

He scores! Old Boys regain the lead with the PP marker!

New Kids win the neutral zone draw and Braxton moves up with the puck.

 

Crosses the blue line and throws one on net. Fowler gets a stick on it and it GOES IN!

 

Oh man, Fowler is looking for the nearest hole to crawl into right now. A very unfortunate own-goal right after the Old Boys had managed to retake the lead, brings the New Kids to even footing again.

2-2 with just over 8 minutes left to play in the second.

The Old Boys are trying to regain the lead as right off the draw Strauss lets rip a snapper that CAL G kicks aside, but Fowler picks it up looking to make up for his gaff.

 

He lets rip a slapper from the hash marks but CAL G is there to stop it.

 

Both sides are pressing hard but CAL G and Kanou are both standing up to the task.

 

Both sides look tired as aside from a few hits, nothing happens for the last 6 minutes of the period, and the buzzer sounds to end the second with the score tied at 2-2.

 

The New Kids dominated the shot department, outshooting the Old Boys 19-10 in the second, and scoring twice on those chances.

We're back for the third, with Kjeldsen swapping in for the Old Boys and Gloves taking over net duties for the New Kids.

 

Jenkins wins the draw over Strauss and the third is under way!

 

Reikkinen gets the puck from Jardy and moves in looking to add to his point totals, but Kjeldsen handles it easily.

 

Both sides look energized from the intermission and Anton Brekkar gets called for tripping as the New Kids were buzzing around the Old Boys zone and the New Kids get a chance to take the lead.

The New Kids can only muster up one shot on Kjeldsen and the PP ends uneventfully.

 

Fatigue is setting in again as there's a lot of hitting but only 2 shots between the PP ending and the 15 minute mark.

 

15:11 through, Clark Marcellin gets the best chance of the third so far with a cannon of a slapper that gives Kjeldsen some trouble but is handled in the end.

 

17:47 through and Ryan Sullivan is going to the box for hooking. Big chance here for the Old Boys to win this game in regulation as they head to the PP again.

The Old Boys are pushing for the lead but they just can't seem to hit the net as the New Kids are throwing their bodies in front of everything.

 

The period ends, but not before the New Kids gets some chances of their own that are stifled.

 

We're going to sudden-death overtime!

 

Score tied at 2-2 and the shots this period were 8-7 in favour of the Old Boys.

Both sides are throwing everything at the net but can't beat the goalie, or the defenders who are making sure as few shots as possible get through.

 

2:42 and Pavel Koradek has the puck in the slot. He snaps one top corner and he scores! That'll end this game 3-2 for the New Kids who take the 3-1 lead in the series!

Reikkinen keeps his point streak alive and the New Kids have a stranglehold on the series. The Old Boys fought valiantly and had a strong effort til the bitter end, but ultimately fell short.
