Season 40 Will be the Last for one of the VHL's Original Franchises

There are now only two. Two original VHL franchises, the Toronto Legion and Calgary Wranglers they are all that remain from the first time the puck dropped on the VHL. With Season 40 coming to an end, the Vasteras Iron Eagles will be about to play their final games. With the team eliminated from playoff contention, their last game will be against Davos, fittingly, on home ice. After that the team will make the trek south east to the capital city of Stockholm. To many, this move is a positive thing and one that ends a reign of mediocrity in Sweden. To a small few however, it is seen as a useless move and one made to please the circlejerky nature of the VHL. I think you can probably guess which side I am on.

Vasteras has been mediocre for a long time. The team has become a joke, a comical way to look a the league. The question though is what will change by going to Stockholm? The answer to that is likely nothing. The same GM is in place, the same players will make the trip to the new city and there will likely be very minimal, if any, culture change. It will be a long process of course, and it may take another five seasons before Vasteras Stockholm is in any place to contend. They are a team that is about to go through a rebuilding process that if history is any indicator, could take a long time.

The argument to leave Vasteras in Vasteras is a simple one that rings true in all of the hockey world; tradition. I don't usually care about tradition, in music, movies or anything else, if you can do it better then tradition, than do it. However, in sport tradition is important. Today, the VHL has just two original teams, both of which are in the North American Conference. There are no original European teams left and that is something worth noting.

Though they only won the cup twice in 40 years, Vasteras were always a mainstay in the VHL, until now.

However, the biggest argument for me personally against moving Vasteras is that I have a close connection to the team. It was the team my first goalie played for in Season Five, I played there with my second player and of course, I was the General Manager when we finally broke the "curse" in Season 26. It took a lot of hard work from the entire team to get to where we got, it took even more work to change the teams culture, however we did it through hard work and some luck of course. I don't know if the current leadership group in Vasteras Stockholm has what it takes to build a contender, but I know that no matter where the team is located, it won't make a difference.

I wish the best of luck to the new franchise, and I think they can turn it around. I also reject the idea that a new city will make any amount of difference for them, long or short term. If you reject to play for Vasteras but will play for Stockholm, you're a part of the problem the league has always faced, circlejerk.

Eh, the franchise already moved once and was originally Vasteras IK and/or Black Eagles, not Iron Eagles. Helsinki and Seattle aren't less original at this point.

my point is not so much that no vasteras sucks, it's the reason they left that sucks. Mob mentality won out which sucks.

I don't have an argument against that which is why I posted in this MS (which focuses more on tradition and your personal past with Vasteras) instead of in response to your other posts.

Interesting write up about your take on the move. Yeah, it is essentially just changing the name/logo and calling it a new team. However, your also right when you say the team has become a joke, and that's where the justification for the move lies. Whether the mob mentality (or circlejerk) is right or wrong, when new members see that type of thing they're not going to have any respect for the franchise or want to play for a team that, in your words, is a joke.
