When Nils Andersson was traded back to Moscow at the conclusion of S94, someone, and I can't remember who and it's not in the trade thread so it must have been somewhere else, said that the Menace were guaranteed to not win the cup again.

Well..

Andersson spent 8 seasons in the VHL, 7 of them with Moscow. He joined in S89, at the end of the Menace's last long competitive cycle (which famously resulted in no championships but as many as five unsuccessful trips of the finals), winning the Victory Cup as a rookie. Obviously, as we know by now, the Victory Cup is a pretty telltale sign that no Continental Cup is forthcoming.

Andersson ended up winning 4 Victory Cups in his career, which might well be an all-time record – 3 with Moscow and 1 with Toronto. That Toronto season is key here as it was a) the only time Andersson made it to the finals and b) he lost to Moscow. Yes, the only season that the Menace have won the Continental Cup in the last 8 seasons (and indeed longer but ignore that), was when Nils Andersson was sent away in S94.

There must have a been a sigh of relief when Andersson retired in the off-season, meaning Moscow goes into this season as guaranteed Continental Cup champions.
