AJW 2,291
I just saw @Thunder 's article I promise I was thinking of writing a similar article before seeing yours please don't copy right me Malmo Nighthawks in S97 S97 was a season to remember for the Malmo Nighthawks. After making two massive trades in the pre-season to acquire defender Lucy Leitner @LucyXpher, as well as four prospects (Narnia Shaw @Dabnad, Bret Weier @Quanack, Ty Duke @TheDuke, and Xhekajs middletoe @Xhekajsleftankle), the Malmo Nighthawks were able to accomplish the best regular season record with 116 points to take home the S97 Victory Cup. Malmo has won two Victory Cups prior in the S90's (S92, S93) making this the franchise's 3rd in 6 seasons. An impressive accomplishment but one that many know does not equal a Continental Cup. The Nighthawks are determined to make a solid run these playoffs and will rely on many key players who have led the team throughout the entire regular season. Goaltender Jorgen Lovstrom @Pifferfish can easily be seen as the team's MVP this season. With 50 wins, 0.934 SV%, 1.99 GAA, and 9 shutouts, Lovstrom led all goaltenders in the VHL in all four categories. Lovstrom is in his 3rd season with the Nighthawks and has smashed all his season highs in S97. The Nighthawks finished S97 with an impressive 146 Goals Against (2.02 per game) and a massive credit for that goes to Lovstrom. Forwards Viktor Jensen @Advantage, Savaisk Tzesar @comrade cat, and Ronald Johnson MacWallace III @RJMW will be counted on to produce most of Malmo's offense these playoffs. The three S89 veterans will be entering retirement after these playoffs, and after playing full careers with the Nighthawks I can most definitely bet that these three are itching for a Continental Cup. The furthest Malmo has gone in a playoff run with these three is the 1st round, so while playoff experience isn't fully there, hunger and determination are. Forward Philip Rave @tcookie, who may have seemed "quiet" this season, has a huge chip on his shoulder. After spending the last 6 seasons with Malmo (since the S92 Victory Cup) Rave has not yet seen any playoff success either. With 86 points in S97, 22 less than his S96 campaign (108), Rave will be hungry these playoffs wanting to contribute more for the team. Lastly, newly acquired defender Lucy Leitner @LucyXpher will need to play a big role on the blueline for Malmo. Leitner set a season high of 92 points while also being Malmo's 2nd highest point producer in the regular season. Leitner won a Continental Cup with the Riga Reign in S95 which brings some great playoff experience to the team, and also a great story for her to tell if Malmo is to be matched against the Reign following the wildcard round. Potential Playoff Troubles @Spartan @Lemorse7 There are two teams in the European Conference who will pose a huge threat to the Malmo Nighthawks. The 4th seeded Riga Reign, and the 2nd seeded Moscow Menace. Through the S97 regular season the Nighthawks did hold winning records against both teams (Riga 4-1, Moscow 3-2), but recent history may speak different volumes. Since Malmo's S92 Victory Cup, Riga and Moscow have knocked Malmo out of the playoffs a combined four out of five times. S92 1st Round exit (London 4-0) S93 1st Round exit (Moscow 4-1) S94 1st round exit (Riga 4-1) S95 1st Round exit (Riga 4-0) S96 1st Round exit (Moscow 4-1) At least one of these two teams can be guaranteed to face off against Malmo in these playoffs. The 4th seeded Riga Reign currently have a 2-0 lead over the Prague Phantoms in the best of 5 European Wildcard Round. If they are to finish off Prague, the next series will be Riga vs Malmo. If Malmo is able to defeat the Reign and end their 1st round curse, Malmo should more than likely faceoff against the 2nd seeded Moscow Menace in the European Conference Finals. Moscow will first play the HC Davos Dynamo after this wildcard round, and in S97 Moscow was able to defeat Davos 5 times to 0. Malmo has some work cut out for them, and if history is looking to repeat itself then this hardworking S97 Nighthawks team will surely be disappointed. The Future The future is looking brighter than most would have expected for the Malmo Nighthawks. After selling away all future draft picks in order to complete the two trades made in the pre-season, our players have been hard at work! (D) Narnia Shaw @Dabnad and (LW) Bret Weier @Quanack were called up this season with both players being able to surpass the 400 TPE mark (Shaw - 521 TPE, Weier - 443 TPE). We are extremely proud of their production not only in TPE earning but rookie point production as well! Weier managed a 22 point rookie season campaign and Shaw managed a 52 point rookie season campaign, tying for 4th in all rookie scoring. Our other two prospects of the trade stayed down this season to work on their development. (C) Ty Duke @TheDuke is approaching the 400 TPE cap while currently sitting at 380 TPE, and (RW) Xhekajs middletoe @Xhekajsleftankle has been working his butt off to currently sit at 349 TPE! At this rate we will be able to call both up next season to fill the missing holes of the three retiring forwards, which is such an amazing thing. We are extremely proud of the work ethic of our new players! Dabnad, Gaikoku-hito, sadie and 7 others 8 1 1 Link to comment https://vhlforum.com/topic/154587-is-this-malmos-season/ Share on other sites
