jRuutu 2,582
576 games played - I made it to the end! In those 576 games, I managed to collect 736 points, I am almost certain that is the highest total I have ever collected with any of my players in VHL, so that is nice. A big part of my success goes to a great organization - Moscow Menace, the players and the staff. With this media spot article, I will also reach 1700 TPE, another milestone I am almost certain I have never reached with any of my previous players. With those hard-earned TPEs, I have focused mainly on faceoffs lately. I figured faceoffs would be the best place to invest as even one faceoff victory more could be the difference between victory and defeat in the playoffs. That faceoff victory could result in a powerplay goal or perhaps an important puck control in the defensive zone late in the game when defending a lead. If I am not terribly mistaken, I should reach 89 faceoffs with the TPE I earn from this media spot. I did not follow the statistics too closely, but after investing in faceoffs lately and improving from 86 to 88, I was able to climb over the 62% mark from the "low 61%", then I dropped under 62% for a few sims, and in the end, I finished the regular season with over 62%, so a small improvement for sure. I like to think that those couple extra faceoff wins per game played a small part in me finishing the regular season with over 100 points. In other news, Moscow Menace finished first in the regular season. It was always going to happen with the talent on the roster. Moscow won 51 games out of 72. I was going to write next about how 51 games won in the EU division equals 76 games won in the NA division, but then I remembered we only play 72 games. It will be interesting to see if the "regular season curse" once again comes to haunt Moscow and the regular season winner. If it does, it will be even more interesting to see if general managers will actively try to avoid finishing first in the future as it seems rarely one team goes from regular season champs to playoff champs, maybe some even aim to finish somewhere in the 3-5 range. I have read somewhere there is some kind of wild card boost, but I decided not to investigate further to stay away from statements based on research and facts. Perhaps, now that there is a bigger draft class coming teams might not even have to try that hard to finish somewhere else than first as there are more quality players and tighter games coming up. Maybe we still end up seeing some increased love for physical players as they could be the perfect lottery ticket to avoid finishing too high in the standings as the checking is fairly cheap to increase, but still, teams could have a fair chance to win in the playoffs with the physical players as the hits are a solid bonus in those tight games. Similar to winning faceoffs, a couple of solid hits at the right time could turn the game around. I would say the middle-of-the-pack teams might and should consider going with the physical approach more to gain an edge.
