Season 42: Helsinki Improves

The 42nd season of the Victory Hockey League is barreling along, with the league rapidly approaching the trade deadline, the final stretch will soon be in sight and, before you know it, it will be playoff time once again. For the Helsinki Titans, Season 42 has been a season of great improvement. With the Riga Reign finally out of the picture, as they entered a rebuild, the Titans have been able to lay claim on the European Conference and have led it by a good margin for the vast majority of the season.

In addition to their improved success as a team compared to previous seasons, many individual players on Helsinki have finally found their stride. Here are a few examples:

Jackson Miller

In Season 41, S39 right-winger Jackson Miller finished the season with a dismal 57 points. He struggled greatly and it was blatantly obvious that frustration was setting in. In Season 42, however, Miller has turned things around. 45 games in, Miller stands with 62 points, already surpassing last years disturbingly sad point totals. Miller is finally playing the way the Titans expected him to play when they drafted him in Season 39.

James Faraday

Although James Faraday was Helsinki's leading point-getter in Season 41, his play still left something to be desired. He finished the season with 73 points, and he currently sits with 59 through 45 games of Season 42. Well on pace to pass last years totals. Faraday has also become a lot more of an all-around player, as his Season 42 shot block and hit totals are also much improved over the previous season.

Don Draper

Draper has long been a hit or miss kind of player. This season, though, it looks like he may have hit. So far through 45 games this season, Draper holds steady with 56 points and an impressive 82 shot blocks. These numbers are good enough to put him in third for defenseman scoring in the league, just slightly behind Lord Karnage of Stockholm, but quite far behind New York veteran Matt Bentley. Regardless of where he is in league standings, his play this year represents a great improvement and could signal that he's finally going to live up to the hype that surrounded him when he was drafted.

Those were the three largest and most obvious examples, but that isn't to discount the rest of the Helsinki squad. The team as a whole is showing great signs of strength. Naomi Young is picking up the pieces after a shitty Season 41 performance, Oskars Harumpf is continuing to improve over previous seasons, and defenseman Jake Wylde is beating the shit out of more people than ever.

Helsinki will be one of the most interesting teams to follow as we move past the trade deadline and towards playoffs. They have a deal with Calgary lined up to acquire the retiring Robert Gow III, who should further bolster their offense or maybe he will even fall back to the blue-line to support Draper and Wylde. In any event, Season 42 will be one to watch.
