Overview

A.C. Savage is a hockey player in the Victory Hockey League, entering his second full season for the Seattle Bears. Savage was a highly touted prospect for a couple of months leading up to his VHLM debut for the Turku Outlaws, but fizzled out incredibly fast. Savage played pretty well for the Outlaws, but his work ethic faltered and his draft stock plummeted. He threatened an early retirement, citing a lack of interest in playing hockey anymore as his primary reasoning. As of now, he has completed his rookie season and is still on the Bears roster with no official retirement filed to the league office.

While Savage spent most of S42 trying to fight everyone that he played against, his actual hockey skills go beyond that. We'll be touching on the areas that Savage excels at, if he re-focused himself on being a productive member of the Seattle Bears.

Pros

Savage is a strong skater when he is focused on playing actual hockey and not just fighting. When he is looking for a fight, his skating becomes a bit erratic. However, when he is focused on winning and performing, he rarely makes a misstep on the ice and is tough to knock off balance. He isn't a strong player, so his athleticism and agility are what keeps him upright. He skillfully manages to maintain his balance while showcasing some impressive puck handling skills. Savage didn't see the puck very much this past season, due to his attempts at drawing a brawl - but when he is moving the puck down the ice, it can be a joy to watch. He has a plethora of moves that he utilizes to keep defenders on their toes and off balance. He moves as well with the puck as he does without it. Finally, once he gets the puck where he wants it, he is a fantastic passer. He has great vision on the ice and the ability to place the puck exactly where it needs to be. If Savage can maintain his composure this year, he could be a top passer in the league.

Cons

Savage's biggest issue is his mental state. He doesn't have any issues per say, but he hasn't been focused on hockey lately. Instead, he has tried to fight everyone in the league and it hasn't paid off. In fact, Savage didn't draw a single fight last year, which is why his first weakness is as an instigator - he can't get anyone to drop the mitts. Savage also has a poor work ethic. He stopped showing up for practices for multiple weeks, and when he finally returned to the ice, he lackadaisically went through the motions and showed almost no improvement over the course of an entire season. If he would commit himself to improving, he could likely be a much more valuable asset. Savage's other areas of weakness include just about every imaginable category. He can pass, but he absolutely cannot score. He found the net more than expected in his rookie year, and we expect a harsh reduction in goals in his sophomore season. He isn't great in the faceoff circle, although it could be an area targeted for improvement. He also is incredibly weak defensively, and is prone to giving up great positions to the opposition. Savage will need to shore up his work ethic if he wants to remedy the many holes in his game.
