DollarAndADream 3,356
The season has ended not to long ago, and the Cologne Express have been crowned the champions of Season 42. This might come as a surprise to some, as the top teams in each conference were not the ones to win the Continental Cup. The Helsinki Titans were the best in their conference and the Quebec City Meute owned theirs as well. Helsinki was ousted by Cologne in seven games, and with Martin Brookside on a roll it seemed to be likely for them to ride him to glory. In the same regard, Quebec's goalie Brock Waldron carried them through their series against New York, so it looked like it was going to be a strong goaltending battle in the finals. This was not the case. Brookside out-battled Waldron quite heavily and Brock Waldron could not play the same way against the Express that he did against the Americans. The Cologne Express' key acquisitions in Robin Gow and Martin Brookside proved to be huge when that same goalie and player were the MVP's of their playoff run. Robin Gow was the one who won that cup for them, in a gigantic overtime win 1:24 into the period, heartbreaking Quebec City. ---------------------------------- ---------------------------------- This off-season, Quebec has already made a couple of moves to try and better their roster for the next season. They sent left winger Rami Jakobssen and a Season 44 Quebec 2nd Round Pick to the Calgary Wranglers. In return, they received Helsinki's Season 44 2nd Round Pick and Calgary's Season 45 2nd Round Pick. Doing this move freed up a bit of cap space heading forward, with the moves they plan to move during the off-season. Not long after that, Quebec went all-in to acquire defense. They sent a Season 44 Quebec 1st Round Pick, Season 45 Quebec 1st+2nd Round Picks, and a Season 45 Calgary 2nd Round Pick over to the Helsinki Titans for defensemen Patrick Demko and Jake Wylde. Doing this had them acquire the big time defenseman they wanted, while taking in a VHL-ready defender on top of that. It will be interesting to see how great Demko will become in the future. --------------------------------- --------------------------------- With all of this being said, we sat down with Travis Boychuk, centerman on the Quebec City Meute, to grab his thoughts on the future: Interviewer: What do you have to say about your team's loss in the finals, now that there has been some time for everything to settle down? TB: We accomplished many things this season, from the Victory Cup to defeated our nemesis New York Americans, and playing the VHL Finals. Through it all, Cologne came through on top, but I am very proud of my team. They have a tough squad over in Cologne, and a team that will stay strong for next season. Although I am disappointed with the final outcome, I can't focus on that. My team and I grew a lot this season. ------------------------------------------- Interviewer: What are your thoughts on the departure of Jakobssen, and the acquisition of Wylde and Demko? TB: It will be sad to see Rami Jakobssen go, but I wish him fare well in his VHL journeys. He is going to my old team in Calgary of course, and I know they have a great organization over there. Regarding Jake Wylde, it will be great to play with him again. I played with him in my early days of the league over in the VHLM with the Turku Outlaws, so there should be some chemistry there. He's a big game player. Patrick Demko I don't know too much about him, but he seems like a solid fit and a great youngster to have moving forward. I can definitely see him being a legit top defender in the VHL. -------------------------------------------- Interviewer: For next season, where do you see your team in the league? TB: I think we'll be a top team in the conference once again. We still have the same core of players, and while some teams have gotten better I find it difficult to see anyone remaining as consistent as us. With Bruno and Aksel solidifying the top line, Waldron in the net, and me on the second line, the sky is the limit as far as I'm concerned. We didn't lose a whole lot either. I'm confident in Denis, Demko, Wylde, and Holmes as well. I think there could be another Meute and Express finals, but I don't want to jump ahead of myself this early. We haven't even started yet and there could be more deals to be done with the team. That does it for our interview.
