Kyanon Trade to Davos All But Delivered???

www.VHLHockeynews.com

Hockey Players are no strangers to rumours and certainly one coming out that has caught some traction has been the much maligned young defenseman Biggu Kyanon of the New York Americans. Several sources have reported that New York has a deal in place for the off-season with Davos to move the young defender. Not all the details are known but apparently it will involve Patrick Demko whom is set to become a UFA in the off-season, Maxime Perron and a 1st round pick.

So lets break down this possible players in the trade.

Patrick Demko – A mobile offensive defenseman, Demko has garnered alot of attention this year as a candidate for the Labatte trophy based on his offensive output. With 64 points in 57 games, Demko sits 3rd in scoring by defensemen this year and has been highly productive on the powerplay this year. Despite being in his prime years, pundits do not believe there is much more progression in Demko’s game. He plays a solid two way game, isn’t very physical but has the skating and offensive abilities of a top pairing dman. Assuming he is signed prior or post trade, the Americans would be effectively replacing the production of Kyanon with Demko minus whatever potential Kyanon has remaining.

Maxime Perron – A highly successful junior forward, Perron and Kyanon were actually teammates for a time in Brampton before Perron made the jump to the VHL. Perron has been progressing, though slowly and while he may not wind up being a star player, he has been a solid contributor for Davos in his rookie season. Perron is still fairly young so he still has the potential to grow into a top 3 role in the VHL.

Biggu Kyanon – The key gamble in this trade is the acquisition of the small speedy defenseman Kyanon. Not yet into his second year of pro, Kyanon has already been in the media spotlight already. Falling to the Americans when he was originally projected to contend in the top 3 of the draft of S46, there was much talk in and around his development path and ability to translate his game to the VHL level. Despite having 46 points in 57 games sofar as a rookie defenseman, it seems there are some other issues behind the scenes with Kyanon leading up to this possible trade. Twitter was all abuzz with possible character issues and reddit users claiming that Kyanon asked for a trade to the EU conference. Despite having a rough start in the season and still learning the ropes, Kyanon could be considered to be as good as Demko in overall play by the time playoffs roll around.

So why exactly would New York do this? Well for one, if the rumours are true and there have been locker room issues with Kyanon, this trade enables them to replace his production with a lower potential but more proven defenseman of the same calibre in Demko. They also get a depth forward back in Perron whom could provide depth for them when Wolf retires in the off season. Whats more is that the S47 pick could help them acquire another prospect in replacement of Kyanon and stagger their developing prospect structure this way. Davos of course can do this as it adds a younger defenseman in the same mould of Demko but with the possibility to be a lot stronger in his all around game. Despite not having the statistics to prove it, Kyanon does have the elite toolset of an top pairing offensive mobile defenseman. Kyanon is also cost controlled and if the rumours are to be believed, would very much like to move to a European team. Davos has had a good reputation in controlling the locker room despite having star power in there so it is possible they are more willing to handle whatever situation is involving Kyanon and the New York locker room. The loss of Perron and the S47 pick for would sting, but they still retain two more 1st round picks and they potentially bring a dman that will surpass Demko  to strengthen their backline while Richardson is still part of the core in Davos and their window as contenders remains open.

Certainly we will expect to hear more of this in the off-season when the trade window is open again.
