eaglesfan036 4,598
Hans WinGod – The VHL’s Best Goalie Looking back at the S43 draft, it is clear that the third overall pick was the best selection of the draft (though the top two picks also turned out well). Wingate easily holds the most tpe from the draft at 769, and looks to be the league’s top goalie for a while, as he won’t have much competition until the S45 goalies get a bit older. Let’s take a season by season look at the greatness of WinGod. Season 43 Season 43 was a rebuilding year for Calgary, but I don’t remember hearing Wingate complain once. Wingate finished the season with a 0.912 save percentage, which put him at 8th in the league above only RIG G and Jax Barnstormer. However, he didn’t have much to work with, as his only legitimate defensewoman was Jaime Hill. Even though the team was losing, Wingate was very supportive in the locker room, as he developed instant chemistry with longtime team captain Marcus Hurley. Season 44 Season 44 was a huge jump year for both Wingate and the Wranglers as a whole. After a few big trades, Calgary was ready to compete for the cup. Most experts overlooked the Wranglers, as few expected the team to go from worst to first. While the team certainly had a lot of talent within the skaters, WinGod was clearly the MVP of the team. His 0.923 save percentage was the best in the league, earning him the Aidan Shaw trophy as the top goalie in the league. His dominant performance continued into the playoffs, where he netted an even better 0.926 save percentage and 3 shutouts as the Wranglers went on to defeat the Express in the finals. Season 45 The Wranglers again were in the thick of the cup race in Season 45, and though Wingate didn’t have quite as good of a regular season. After slumping for the first half of the regular season, Wingate whipped himself back into shape and had the league’s second best save percentage at 0.917. However, Wingate got hot at the right time, as his stellar play continued into the playoffs. Wingate again lead all goalies in the playoffs with an outstanding 0.936 save percentage. In both the New York and Helsinki series, the Wranglers were often outshot by a decent margin, but WinGod was able to keep his team in games to secure the victory. Unfortunately, after taking a 3-1 series lead against Helsinki the entire team collapsed and managed to lose the cup. Season 46 and Beyond As a S43 draftee, Wingate still has many seasons to continue his dominance. With a cup, some great save percentages, and a top goaltender award, WinGate is well on his well to becoming a hall of fame player. He has been outstanding both on and off the ice, and even though goalies don’t usually get to wear the “A” on their jersey, I feel as though he represents our team too well not be a captain. Long live WinGod! Edited November 30, 2015 by eaglesfan036
