I remember it like it was yesterday. Well, that's because it was yesterday.  Just after 10:00 PM in fact. I was pacing around my room, patiently waiting for my phone to ring. It had been nearly 24 hours since I had become eligible to be picked up by a VHLM team and the window to claim me was quickly coming to a close. To be honest, I remember thinking "man I hope I don't go to a North American Conference team". It had nothing to do with the place or people. I just wanted to be closer to home. Closer to my friends and family. Another half hour passed and I was starting to think that no one actually wanted to pick me up. Then the phone rang.

"It's Bern. They want you in the lineup tomorrow night. Pack what you need and meet me at the airport. Your ticket is already paid for and the plane leaves in just over an hour."

I breathed a sigh of relief and gathered my things. I rushed to tell my parents about the call and the trip. Given the circumstances I didn't have as much time as I would've liked, so I promised to call when I had the chance. I gave them one last hug goodbye before heading for the door.

I took a step out the door and onto the ice. I will always remember the fans, the music, the announcer saying my name. Less than 24 hours earlier I was in my room in Sweden. Now I'm suited up for the Bern Royals of the VCHLM. It really was a dream come true.

But now the dreaming is over. This is the real deal and I'm here to show the world I belong. And that's exactly what I'm going to do.
