Game 36: Meute vs. Express

Final Score: 2 - 5

Since I won't be in town for 2 weeks after tonight, I figured I'd release this edition early. It is an appropriate game for the edition still. After that win against the Legion, we cruised through two more wins, beating Riga and Seattle before landing in Canada to play the fake Frenchmen of Quebec.

The league has been doing funny things this season already, as previously predicted. Helsinki, with their 3 rookies, 3 complete washups, and terrific goalie, somehow are managing to keep pace with this talented Cologne team, while expect top EU favourites, Davos, seem to be struggling. Regardless, the Express know that every point counts, especially against league favourites, and despite being in a foreign country, that did not seem to phase them.

Nor did it when Koponen stuffed the puck in the back of the net to give  Quebec the league. The Cologne team skated calmly back to the center circle, and took only 4 minutes to find the equalizer. Skovgaard shuffled the puck back to Kaminogi, who fired a one-timer at the net, which was deflected five-hole by the stick of Jarvi with 35 seconds left in the period.

The Express turned the tables in the second, outshooting the Meute 12-5, but it took 15 minutes before they could find a way past Clegane. D. Hamitlon passed to Jarvi at the corner of the boards, who found Skovgaard cutting back out to the top of the slot. He wasted no time and snapped the shot over the blocker of Clegane to have Cologne jump out in front. Then on some sloppy play by Quebec, with 10 second to go, COL D4, COL D3, and COL LW2 connected for a goal that probably should have been stopped by Clegane, giving the Express a 3-1 lead heading into the final period.

Koponen scored his second of the game to make it interesting, but it was David Hamilton with his 6th goal of the season (same amount as Koponen) who received the puck from COL C1 and Kaminogi, as that second line depth seemed to continue to punish teams. Finally, because the top line defensemen were feeling quite inadequate, with 28 seconds left in the game, Kyanon found Phil Hamilton, who split the defense with a beautiful through pass to send Skovgaard on a breakaway, lifting the puck over the shoulder of Clegane.

The difference in this game was definitely the goaltending, Zhumbayev boasted a .913 SV%, stopping 21 of 23 shots, while Clegane struggled with a .792 SV% saving just 19 shots of the 24. The Express can't expect things to go their way forever and they will need to find a way to dominate when teams are playing as well as they are.

3 Stars

1 - Niels Skovgaard (COL)
2 - Joel Jarvi (COL)
3 - Aleksi Koponen (QUE)
