A Legion Xmas Story - Chapter 5

Wasn't going to keep posting these her, but I've heard @Draper and @Higgins like good content - so I figured I wouldn't keep this to Toronto's LR and continue contributing to the board's success!

Chapter 5

World tossed and turned, fighting the midday sun as it streamed in through the hotel window. His head was pounding but because he had spent so many mornings with the company of just hangovers, he was numb to its effect. Grumbling, he got up and drew back the curtains, revealing the bustling city of Toronto many feet below.

Slush and high prices and profits; that’s all World saw. People tricking themselves into thinking that being in a fake state of good spirits cleanses them of all bad deeds done throughout the year but that’s probably the most selfish delusion. They just have to fake it for two weeks or so and that should wash away their guilt of being self-absorbed creatures.

World sighed aloud. “But that’s just what we are.”

An hour later, World was sipping coffee and reading the new terrors in the world from the newspaper. A friendly waitress came up and introduced herself as Mary.

Would you like anything at all to eat, Mr. Free?”

“Mmm,” World grunted, not looking up. “Let me just…” He reached for the menu and started scourging it for a particular dish.

“I’ll give you a moment. Just catch my eye when you’re ready, Sir.” Mary said and turned away to attend to a sickly loving couple.

That’s why World liked hotels. It was their job to please; even if they didn’t mean it, even if they’ve had a terrible day, every single day of the year they had to pull it together and smile for everyone. Mary came back with a fresh cup of coffee and leant close to him, putting a hand on his shoulder as she set it down.

“I put some whiskey in this one. Looks like you need it. It’s on the house. Enjoy.”

A flicker flashed across World mind, so quickly, it didn’t register. World put the cup to his lips, savouring the smell. He set it back down on the table and finally found what he was looking for on the menu. Looking up he locked eyes with Mary and she came trotting over.

“I’d like the pancakes with strawberries and blueberries on the side.”

“A breakfast classic! Can’t get any homelier than that! Butter and syrup on top separately?”

“Uh, on the side.”

Mary joint the note on her pad and glanced down at him. “What ails you so?"

World stared at the napkin holder, unable to meet her gaze. There was something about this woman… something he could not quite figure out. She not only seemed to be able to read people’s expressions, but their feelings too. She was a master of empathy, and this week, World was going to need a lot of that. This week was Christmas week.

“You got 30 minutes to spend?” World asked sarcastically.

Mary turned around and yelled “JIM! I’M GOING ON BREAK! PANCAKES WITH STRAWBERRIES, BLUEBERRIES, BUTTER, AND SYRUP ON THE SIDE! AND TWO MORE IRISH COFFEES.” She sat down opposite him and folded her hands, leaning in. “As a matter of fact I do.”

World drew a deep breath and began.
