The Biggest Issues Affecting the Draft Stock Of The Top 6 TPE Draft Prospects

Recommended Posts

Activity is high, mainly because people are shouting at one another. Whether it's arguing your views on a entrepreneur-turned-president of a country that ISN'T THE BIGGEST IN THE WORLD, picking on a rookie goalie for having bad stats as if that's not an unusual thing, getting mad at a VHLM relocation or trying to justify that you sold your laptop to a guy without wiping your internet history, the VHL's had way more posts in the public forum over the past few days, and negativity the main reason for it. So this article is me pointing out negatives in prospect's draft stock. Stay Active VHL!

Torsten Ironside

DollarAndADream

Pretty much everyone has DollarAndADream taking Ironside first overall, why wouldn’t they? He’s got a good history making players, he’s one of the better prospects in this draft and, more important than anything, he joins his own Toronto Legion team. So, what could possibly affect Ironside’s draft stock? Very little to be honest. The only thing I can possibly think of is that maybe DollarAndADream has a concern that he can’t maintain two players at full earning capacity at the same time whilst also managing GM duties, so takes someone like King instead of Ironside to ensure he won’t have to worry about that possibility of lagging behind in earning with either Ironside or his new player.

Marcus King

He’s not Torsten Ironside

This is really the only thing affecting Marcus King’s draft stock right now. Had the teams been as they were and Ironside not been Toronto Legion’s GM, King likely would have gone first overall, simple as. It’s only the fact that DollarAndADream has full control over the length of his player’s stay with the team that has seen many lock Ironside as first overall in their mock drafts. In fairness, Kendrick doesn’t have much of a history of leaving teams who are currently competing, or at least not much of a history since I’ve been here. The only possible example of doing so would be the time Kohler left the Cologne Express in Free Agency to join the Calgary Wranglers, but I’d say there’d even be questions as to whether that Cologne team could have won a cup with Artom Zhumbayev in net. It’s just comparing how likely he’d be to sticking with a team to how likely DollarAndADream sticks with his own team isn’t even fair.

Aleksei Federov

The Bears

Torsten Ironside isn’t the only player in the top six to be represented by a current General Manager as defenseman Aleksei Federov is represented by Seattle Bears GM Banackock. Unlike Ironside however, the Bears are not currently holding onto a pick that will allow them to draft Federov and, if the Bears do not trade into the first in an effort to take Federov, his draft stock may take a hit. The reason behind this is that while Federov is currently submitting point tasks at every opportunity, that isn’t the case with Sven Wolf (the Bears current GM Rule player), who has been on welfare updates through March. With the Bears looking likely to enter a rebuild heading into Season 54, there has been speculation that Sven Wolf will find himself traded to a competing team. If that is the case, that will mean that Sven Wolf is retired and a new GM rule player will likely be created by Banackock. This is where that point about welfare comes into play; Is this trend of Wolf claiming welfare due to lack of time to submit two media articles? If that is the case and he doesn’t have the time to submit two articles, it would seem unlikely that, upon creation of his next player, that TPE from his lone media spot would be granted to Federov rather than his own developing GM Rule player. This would see Federov’s current earning potential take a hit, a small hit, but one that might see him fall down the draft a bit.

Hudson Abbott

Questions over long-term commitment

While no-one can dispute that Bushito is capable of earning TPE at a terrific rate, I think even he would have to admit that he’s not had the best recent history of keeping up that activity throughout his player’s career. His latest example, Season 41 draftee Brady Stropko, earned 657 TPE having played just two and a half VHL seasons, however he would then not earn a single TPE after this point. While his inactivity didn’t hurt his player too much in the immediate future (his fourth and fifth seasons were credible performances), his inability to combat regression led to a sharp dip in form that saw him fail to pick up a point per game in either of his last three seasons. It’s also no secret that Bushito would want to return to a GM job if he were permitted to do so, which would cast further doubt on how long his tenure would be with the team where he would be drafted. With teams looking to draft players who they hope can stick with the team and stay active over an eight season career, Hudson Abbott may see his draft stock affected considering his previous’ players reputation in this area.

Fook Yu

Welfare Player

There’s really no risk of Fook Yu disappointing anyone regardless of what pick he’s drafted with as you know exactly what you’re going to get; a player who you won’t have to worry about going inactive but will predominantly be submitting welfare. According to some sources, it appears that Fook Yu has already been ruled out of being drafted at number two due to his status as a welfare player, so that label clearly has had some effect on his draft stock. The question is, how much will it affect it? Some have speculated that Yu may even fall into the bottom half of the first round, a fall that would be quite unusual for a player who currently has the second most TPE out of all the draftees.

Shawn Gretzky

History

While TheLastOlympian has put in a good eight season career with Shawn Muller (finishing around 900 TPE), it’s certainly been a long time coming for the member to have a player of that ability. Since joining the league in its inaugural season, TheLastOlympian had created six players prior to Muller, all of which had failed to even break the 400 TPE barrier, so I guess you could say that Muller is TheLastOlympian’s first successful player in the VHL. When you compare that output with the other prospects in the top six, he doesn’t have close to the reputation of consistently building good players that they have. Kendrick and TFong have made more Hall of Fame players than TheLastOlympian has made over 400 TPE and even Banackock, a member whose first player only made the VHL in Season 42, has already made more 500+ TPE players than TheLastOlympian. While GM’s will be hoping that Muller was a sign of things to come as opposed to an irregularity, there is a chance that they may want to take the sure things rather than risk drafting a Dimothensis Vlasis-type player.
