An interesting trade took place to kick off the weekend. First of all it was a trade that happened about halfway through the season starting and the trade deadline, so those barely happen. Second of all, a seemingly rebuilding team made a trade with another rebuilding team. So it was a strange one to see indeed.

:col:To Cologne Express

(S50) Winger Leif Tresler - 36 TPE

S55 RIG 2nd

:rig:To Riga Reign

(S49) Goaltender Ilya Kopralkov - 536 TPE

What Happened

Well Cologne is getting whatever they can for a inactive they don't need at all with new franchise goalie Markus King holding down the fort for the forcible future. The Express wanted to tank and getting rid of a back-up goalie forcing COL G to start 8 games rather than Ilya Kopralkov. In return they get Leif Tresler who is nothing but a throw in probably for cap reasons. He had 5 goals and 4 assists for 9 points before the trade and in the 6 games after he has had 0 points. The 2nd from Riga is interesting it will most likely be 14th overall which could turn into a decent depth player life in the last draft but this draft isn't as deep.

Riga on the other hand gets it's starting goaltender. Which they could have had in Markus King or Vernon Von Axelberry last season but we will get into that later. Kopralkov though, he is a decent goaltender who is getting up there in age though. I think he has this season and two more after this season left to start which gives Riga a decent starter for the time being. He is a stop gap though as they look for a younger better goaltender. It may seem as though Riga thinks it won't win a tanking war with Davos and Cologne so they will semi compete which is a interesting way to go. I don't mind it at all however, some other disagree but everyone is entitled to their own opinion. Before the trade, Kopralkov went 0-2 with a 0.936 save percentage and a 3.60 G.A.A. Since the trade he has gone 1-5 with a 0.901 save percentage and a 3.51 G.A.A. He has been adequate with the team given in front of him.

Verdict

Cologne is trying to tank by giving COL G more starts with Kopralkov gone. They get a 2nd round pick which will be like 14th or 15th overall could be a decent player or could be a inactive. Could end up being an inactive decent player ;) Low risk semi reward. Riga doesn't think they could win a tanking war between Davos and Cologne so they go into semi compete mode. Not that bad of a plan as Stockholm is getting older and younger players aren't stepping up as they should be. Overall though I think right now Cologne wins this due to the fact is helps them tank.
