Well, here I find myself sitting on my lazy ass, half baked on vacation from work. Let me tell you, it's been long overdue and much needed as the two new guys on my crew have been stressing me out. It's also been nice to just kick back, take it easy and have zero work responsibility and stress for the next couple of days here. I took another holiday from December 16th to 28th. I plan on doing something then but this one was simply to find my mind, destress and take it easy. Reconnect with old people, get out a little but enjoy the comfort of the phone not ringing 24/7. I've done a lot of hockey stuff over the last week and have also started a new baseball league. The baseball league is amazing and the hockey work has been alright. Shitty part of it? I've struggled with the VHL lately and it has only begun to grow. The LR's are seemingly at an all-time low? Safe to say? The forum doesn't have much action going for it. GOMHL is growing, SHL seems steady but it's large. As we write this, VHL has 10 members online, GOMHL has 8 (which is rare that it's actually lower than VHL) and the SHL has 63. quite the jump. Now I know I'm going to get shit on for this, but anyone who says "the league isn't dying - get your head out of your ass and quit being like that." is easily the worse off of the two types of members. They're not realistic and have their heads up their own ass. They need to open their eyes and see a couple hard facts. League activity as a whole has dropped. Nothing happens around the forums, there seems to be more and more welfare guys, old members and leave and new members disappear way too much. We can keep members , are talking of taking away teams while others seem to keep expanding and we can't even find people to GM PRO teams anymore. Specific members always step in and act like the tough dog "are you stupid? the leagues not dying. People like you are the problem". Maybe we're not.

I used to love the league (and don't get me wrong, I still do) - but with the GM stress (with literally no reward for me - we missed playoffs again), numerous leagues that I'm in and the fact that the only reason to log in to VHL is to check my team, check my messages, see the sim (if my team is playing) and then I leave the page to a different sim site which I now seem to spend more time on. Why on earth would I spend time on a site, refreshing, waiting for HOURS for any sort of league activity to occur? It's not looking good people. Eventually it comes down to having a few people left, nothing changing (in terms of progression) and people just saying fuck it. Luckily for us, there's a lot of people in the VHL community who care for this place and don't want to see that happen. I, for one, am one of those people. Maybe not the most active of BoG members, but I always get my point across and touch up on 95% of topics. I, at times - like most, can have some pretty radical ideas that may work, may not. Fortunately, I've run into some writing issues with the VHL and I think additionally with the boredom of the league, so I'm here to bring you beautiful some radical ideas - that may work, may not. May be good ideas, may be bad. Either way, here they are:

3 Player System

Radical level --> 7/10

Desperation --> 100%

Idea: VERY BAD

This idea is pretty radical, but not deserving of a 10 because we already have 2. In fact, I think the first time we tried that was pretty crazy and radical. Now, it would just seem like an overkill and make the league look desperate. "Oh, look" says the 12 year old SHLer who says the word pussy and scrub 7 times a day on the SHL forums, "The VHL is letting members create 3 players now because no one wants to join such a boring site". It's an inevitable comment that we all know would come out. Hell, lots of our members may echo the very words too. There would be something amazing about being able to actually ice a full fucking team instead of 5 words, 3 dman and 7 goalies but hey, we're not desperate enough to suck dick yet, sim gods.

Carry over 50% CASH AND raise the cap/fix it!

Radical level: 6/10

Desperation: 7%

Idea: VERY GOOD

Give us a fucking break. Each time we retire our money disappears. We need to find a way to fuck the current cap rules and recreate something from the dirt. Something I love on the SHL is the buoyancy and flexibility of contracts, amounts and shit. I LOVE being able to decide my contract. YES, there should be a minimum for TPE but fuck off with the maximum amount when it comes to ACTIVE members. Raise the cap a bit. Let some guys be the fucking assholes and demand 9 a season. Let those guys who want to, be able to take a hometown discount because they're sweet and unlike when the 10Mill a season guys say it, those hometown boys actually mean they want a cup with you.

Also, let's find a way to make money more important in the VHL. Let us have 50% carryover and let's open up the store and stuff which is available to buy with money. Right now you have a few shallow ways to improve your player. More options = MPORE INTEREST. We have graphics, podcasts and written shit - and not creative. Typically, our media spots are the same old, boring bullshit that has been written since the start of days. DIVERSITY AND OPTIONS = BETTER. There's nothing wrong with implementing new shit and trying it out. If it fails, fuck it - but how do you know it'll truly be gold if you never see it for such and try it out? That's the problem with the BOG. Set on its ways. It wants to change - bring about, but often stuff is shot down because it's not the league they wish to perceive and imagine.

One last time - CHANGE, Diversity and more options. This is what the league needs to survive. People may not find some things, the more we have, the better chances of them liking it.  I don't think this is a bad idea. It's radical ONLY because it's a big change with lots of thought and money going into it.

Alright, I'll bite. Remove player 2.

Radical: 5/10

Desperation: 35%

Idea: Meh. Not a fan, but could be good.

For EVERYONE, EXCEPT GM's. Let us have a GM player - to help the team, grow with the team and make things maybe a little stress free? It helps. It helps keep teams competitive, helps with team needs and dada yadadaa. Every other player is gone. Some will dislike it maybe, but the blue team and most of BOG claim it burns people out. In fact, people feel obligated to make to players. New flash: It's not a requirement of the league for you to make two players. IF you want to, do it. If you know you can do the work, do it. If you claim welfare with one player and but want another player - probably not a good idea hey?? You can't even put in full effort for one player and now you want 2??? THAT = burnt out.

I have the desperation 1/3rd. It could be good, but likely won't do fuck all by getting rid of it. It'll either have MINOR affects or fuck all - but hey, if they think it'll work - try it out. It's not gonna kill the league. Just may do fuck all (which I think will be the case). If anything, now you just cut the league in half for players, lol.

BUT, if you're taking away that, EXTEND our fucking careers.

This has to be the stupidest thing about this god damn league and I've heard it from at least a dozen members outside of the VHL that the reason they don't want to play and build here is because after 8 seasons, there player is automatically retired. We have no choice over it. You could be finally killing it and boom, fuck off. I think this should seriously be looked at and these are my suggestions:

1. Extend careers from 8 seasons to 10 with an auto retirement in the 10th season. This gives us a little more time and may make it bearable for those joining to handle.

2. Take away the auto retire shit altogether until the plater regress below a specific TPE amount. We would have to take a look at regression and determine how hard they get hit and when they start to regress. Just as a basic example for you.

Bob Joe - 1,200 TPE

League rule: Players careers last as long as they allow them to play. This likely rewards active members greatly FYI.

Regression chart:

S6: 25 TPE

S7: 50 TPE

S8: 100 TPE

S9: 150 TPE

S10: 200 TPE

OR

S6: 50 TPE

S7: 75 TPE

S8: 100 TPE

S9: 125 TPE

S10: 150 TPE

S11: 175 TPE

S12: 175 TPE

S13: 200 TPE

S14: 200 TPE

Once TPE drops below 250 or 300, they retire at seasons end.

Bob Joe, start of S6 has (example) 600 TPE. Saying there's 8 weeks in a season plus extra TPE, he gains about 70 TPE a season? IDK. It'd look like this:

Bob Joe Regression:

S6: 600+70 = 670-50 = 620 (+20)

S7: 620+70= 690-75 = 615 (-5)

S8: 615+70= 685 - 100 = 585 (-30)

S9: 585+70= 655 - 125 = 530 (-55)

S10: 530+70 = 600 - 150 = 450 (-90)

S11: 450+70 = 520 - 175 = 345 (-105)

S12: 345+70 = 415 - 175 = 240 ------------> AUTO RETIRED as they dropped below minimum.

Of course, with this style - you'd probably need a few more ways to earn money and TPE.

More ways to earn TPE/Diversity - people like it.

Again, let's have money do something for us in this league. It gives people options and people like those. I know that's probably the biggest thing that could help this site right now. Would help with keeping new member, maybe intrigue old and bring over some fellow sim leaguers.

Store changes:

1. allow for a 1-5 TPE weekly training. If we don't wanna bump the update scale or affect inflation etc, do 100,000 to 250,000 to purchase a "light weekly training" that = 1 TPE.

2. EQUIPMENT. Every other league has it. Offer it to us.

3. Diversity of the shops. Allow us to buy into brands, stocks of VHL teams or players or let us maybe even buy teams.

WELL, that'll do for now. 1,800 words - I'll take 3 weeks for Forsberg. Expect Part 2 later on for Federov. +6/+6/+6

(November 27th to December 3rd    +     December 4th to December to December 10th   +   December 11th to December 17th)

I have always been in favor of extending to 10 seasons. i think 8 seasons are too short.

I also like the idea of more store options because the store is basically save until depreciation and the spend all your money

  • 1 month later...

Review:

I think activity has risen since this article! :P

League contraction probably helped that a lot, and the disbanding of the 2nd player system, which was actually one of the things you mentioned here.

Solid article. You always bring good discussion in.
