The Rebuild Has Started – A look at Cologne's Deadline Deals Part II

This is part two of our article looking at Cologne’s deadline transactions. You can find part 1 here: http://vhlsim.invisi...adline-deals

Tony Stark to New York for New York’s 2nd round pick in Season 38 and Helsinki’s 3rd round pick in Season 37

The next player Cologne dealt away was one they had just acquired at the start of the season. Tony Stark was a part of the impactful Davey Jones trade and was seen as a reclamation project back then, a former 4th overall pick whose development had stalled these past two seasons. The Cologne management thought that they might be able to help him get back on track, but it looks like they have given up on him now. Stark was dealt to the New York Americans for two relatively minor pieces considering his draft position and has been a solid depth player for the Americans. His 9 points in 11 games are pretty good for a player acquired so cheap, but he also is a -6 through 11 games so far (+3 in 45 games for the Express). Time will tell if Tony Stark will ever be more than just a depth-scorer or if Cologne will find a steal in the draft with one of the picks they received for the borderline-bust.

Reggie Dunlop and Vasteras’ 2nd round pick in Season 38 to Toronto for Jamie Shetler, Toronto’s 1st round pick in Season 38, Calgary’s 2nd round pick in Season 37 and Toronto’s 2nd round pick in Season 38

Reggie Dunlop was a cornerstone player for the Express franchise for years; he formed a terrific offensive duo with Captain Kameron Taylor and is one of the highest scoring players in team history. When the Express decided to trade Dunlop to the Legion it eliminated the last bit of doubt that Cologne had started a rebuild and the Dunlop-deal is the biggest one the Express have made so far. Coming back for him was a package of picks, including a 1st rounder in Season 38 and the likely 11th overall in the upcoming draft. Cologne also received forward Jamie Shetler and in turn swapped 2nd rounders in S38, which will likely allow Toronto to gain a few spots in that draft. The move doesn’t seem to have affected Dunlop at all so far, as he has been scoring at pretty much exactly the same pace in Toronto as he was in Cologne. Shetler on the other hand has been a very pleasant surprise for the Express, included into the deal as mainly a cap dump he has really tore it up since arriving in Germany. Through 9 games Shetler has 12 points and an impressive +11 and is one of the main reasons that the Express have been able to pick it up lately. The Legion arguably got the best player in this deal, but it could still very well end up as a great trade for Cologne as well who have the chance at two great players in the two upcoming draft to go with the surprisingly effective Shetler.

Lauris Prikulis to Vasteras for Magnus Hertzberg and Future Considerations

Shortly after the Dunlop deal the Express made a minor prospect swap with Vasteras as well, sending Lauris Prikulis to Sweden in exchange for Magnus Hertzberg. It is rumored that this deal also includes some future considerations that could see Vasteras add another piece in the summer, but so far it looks like this is just a trade of two players that will never amount to much.

Cody Inko and Helsinki’s 3rd round pick in Season 37 to Vasteras for Jaden Button and Vasteras’ 1st round pick in Season 38

The last trade Cologne pulled off before the deadline was another one with Vasteras, this time the Express sent Cody Inko to the Iron Eagles along with a 3rd rounder in the upcoming draft in exchange for a Vasteras’ 1st rounder in Season 38 and minor-league forward Jaden Button. Inko has only played 4 games for Vasteras so far so it’s way too early to judge if acquiring him was a good move or not, but so far his stats look decent with 4 assists in those 4 games. Still, some experts around the league have been criticizing Vasteras for this trade, saying that they overpaid for a player that was decent, but not great, during his time in Cologne. The Iron Eagles are a team that just decided to go all in though, so if Inko helps them on their way to a cup they couldn’t care less about what people think of the trade. This could end up a win-win trade just like the Glass-one, with the Express getting a little more value out of the deal while the Iron Eagles might end up with a cup thanks to Inko bolstering their roster.

I do like mid-season sales. Uncommon here but in such a competitive season it was a nice dynamic to have, particularly how it affected teams' plays. Think you guys absolutely nailed with the timing and the market and still have plenty of flexibility left for next season.

Content: 3/3 - The crazy part is that Cologne might make the playoffs over Vasteras despite starting a rebuild. That's beyond insane, especially considering Vasteras was in front pretty much all year for the last spot.

Grammar: 2/2 - Well done here, no complaints.

Appearance: 1/1 - I'm not sure why you bolded "to" and "for" in the trade overviews and it could've used another picture, but overall it met the requirements here.

Overall: 6/6 -  (Y)
