Dylan Nguyen is an American born Defense-man, hailing from Baltimore, Maryland. At just 18 years old he signed his first professional contract to play for the Saskatoon Wild of the VHLM. Before entering into the VHLM Nguyen played in High School at Belmont Hill, a prep school in Massachusetts, where he excelled on the ice. After finishing his senior season Nguyen returned home to Baltimore to talk to family before turning  down multiple scholarship offers from colleges to go pro. Let's take a look at what Nguyen has to offer Saskatoon.

Pros:

  1. Defense: This kid is a very solid defender. He knows exactly where he needs to be on defense an is rarely out of position on the ice. His good positioning means he does not give up too many easy shots on goal. Along with his positioning another thing that makes him a solid defender is his willingness to block shots, he is not afraid to use any part of his body to keep  a puck from reaching the net. Nguyen is an excellent choice for a PK unit as his defensive skill are probably his most polished going into the VHLM Good positioning and his willingness to block shots are signs that with some more time to develop Nguyen could be a top defender in the VHL.
  2. Passing: When Nguyen has the puck he doesn't have much trouble finding his teammates. Nguyen excels at finding the open man for breakouts and odd-man rushes. His passes are smooth and rarely miss their target. He is most dangerous after making a big stop on defense, as he can quickly get an outlet pass to the open man to start rushes. Nguyen should have no problem picking up assists in the VHLM and when the time comes the VHL as well.
  3. Skating: As a defense-man you wouldn't always expect this kid to glide up and down the ice as well as he does, but sometimes it seems he moves with the grace of a figure skater on the ice. Nguyen is a strong skater who in a pinch can move the puck through the neutral zone himself with relative ease. On a turnover Nguyen can make a team pay as he has breakaway speed and just enough finesse to get past the defense.

Cons:

  1. Strength: Nguyen is not the biggest defense-man on the block and it shows in his lack of strength. Often times in play he is out muscle on the boards, letting loose pucks get away. His lack of strength is also evident when fighting for position in front of the net, sometimes his lack of strength can be exploited and players gain position on him in front of the net. This is something that Nguyen will need to work on in the VHLM if he wants to be considered one of the best defense-man in the league.
  2. Checking: His lack of strength has led to him not developing a good check as well. Nguyen lacks the physicality and will often times elect to poke and stay in front of an attacking player instead of using his body to check them off the puck. As he progresses further in his career Nguyen will have to develop some sort of checking as it will help him hone his defensive skills.
  3. Scoring: While one of his Strengths is passing, which will lead to many assists, Nguyen struggles with putting the puck in the net off his own shots. He lacks accuracy on his wristers and his one-timers and slappers lack the power needed to truly become a scoring threat. Through his youth career Nguyen has never been much of a goal scorer,  he instead seems content with racking up assists and playing solid defense. This isn't the biggest problem with his game since as a defense-man he wont be excepted to score at a high rate. However, if he can improve his shot a little Nguyen has the makings a of a decent 2 way player later in his career.
