This Day In VHL History: Game 3, First Round of the European Conference Playoffs in Season 39!

Recommended Posts

Hi and welcome to this day in VHL history. Otherwise known as the longest Fan590 thread title ever.  Something I'm doing for my random Fan590's when I feel like it. It's more interesting as a gimmick for this site, because our seasons actually don't run a full year. I'm hoping for this to always be coverage of a game, but with off-seasons happening several times a year there is a chance the date I decide to write one of these has no games in it. Although with 7+ years of history, you have to figure one of those years there was a game happening. I'd like to think given that we aren't consistent with our seasons that the VHL has simmed a game every single calendar day at some point or another, if you get what i'm saying.

Anyways, let's get started with a game simmed on the 8th of September in 2014 as the Vasteras Iron Eagles met the Riga Reign in Game 3 of the European Conferences first round.

Game Summary

The series was tied heading into this game at one a piece. But the moment you click on the Game Summary you instantly see why this game was one of the ones I selected. Another OT game happened on the same day as the first round matchup between the Seattle Bears and Calgary Wranglers was going on in the North American Conference. This game however was a notable one in the sorted history of the Iron Eagles franchise. Known for winning only two Cups ever, the franchise would later move to Stockholm seasons down the road, before being scraped altogether when the league contracted. However in Season 39, GM @Corco was giving it one last go after seasons of trying but just not quite getting it done. He had built a solid team, and was pushing to finally change the narrative.

The Iron Eagles won this pivotal game 3 after the game went to triple OT. The Eagles outshot the Reign a crazy 55 to 30, with Mike Szatkowski Jr putting in a stellar performance in the loss. It was @solas Willem Jansen with the clutch Triple OT winner, his second goal of the game. While Vasteras would not end the curse in 39, it's always interesting in the moment to live the highs and lows the VHL can provide. Vasteras would get shut out in a pivotal Game 7 of this series, despite again outshooting Riga. While Szatowski Jr. would get the nod in this series, it was the New York Americans year to take it in Season 39, as they dominated the playoffs only losing twice en route to yet another Continental Cup.

Probably the funnest part of this though is looking through some of the names on the rosters of each team, and trying to remember all the usernames that link up to them. I know some are certainly still active here, all these years later. As is always the case with this day in history.....the more you know, right?

Vaguely remember some of these names.

also bring back vasteras!!!

I'm trying to see if my memory is good enough to put some sort of list together of at least the ones I recall.

Chico Salmon - Fresco

David Collier - Romanes

Jack Sound - Edgar
Keiji Toriyama - Street
Willem Janssen - Solas

Brennan McQueen - Jamie

Jakub Kjellberg - Sandro

Nicklas Valiq - Squinty

Phil Villeneuve - Phil

Robert Gow III - Eagles

Robin Gow - Flyers

Slaeter Fjorsstrom - Sherrifflobo

Eggly Bagelface - Corco

Mike Szatkowski Jr - Mike

Also, Stockholm was so good I don't know how anyone could be happy that we lost that city, name, logo, colors, everything. One of our best ever done logos and colors for me. Probably second to only Cologne, and the new take on the Americans one. All boubabi work I believe, god damn if that man wasn't a fucking crazy good graphics guy.

Chico Salmon was xD Park, I think.  All the others are correct to my memory.

Thanks for posting this, by the way.  Brought back a ton of memories.

I always got Fresco and XDParks players confused. Even back in the day on casts, I'm sure of it.
