This is probably the most despised team in VHL history. Many hate this team but a select few really love this team and want them back. I'm somewhere in the middle, I like the team, I wouldn't mind them back but it also doesn't bother me if they don't come back. Either way, they will forever be the first ever VHL Champions. The team moved to Madrid, Spain to become the Thunder before moving back to Vasteras in like S20.

Season 1 Championship Roster
C - Scotty Campbell [C]
LW - Jon Clarke
RW - Jonathan McKelvie [A]
RW - Nevets Detroit
D - Markus Lidstrom [A]
D - Thor Ljunggren
D - Dean MacIntosh
D - Tommy Brown
G - Matthew Pogge

As you can see, the Season 1 Vasteras squad had the greatest player ever in Scotty Campbell. He was the biggest reason why they were a success right out of the gate. They also had Matthew Pogge who is a HoF goaltender in his own right. McKelvie was a solid player, Lidstrom and Ljunggren were solid defenseman. Overall, the team wasn't expected to win at all but they did it.

Regular Season/Playoff Record

Unfortunately, there are no records which are available to break down the teams for the first 19 Seasons in the VHL for any of the teams which is a crying shame.

Awards

Victory Cup (Best Regular Season Record) - 2 Times

S2 - 55 W | 13 L | 4 OTL | 114 P

S18 - 57 W | 11 L | 4 OTL | 118 P

Vasteras won the Victory Cup in Season 2 after winning he championship in Season 1. It took the a further 16 seasons to win their 2nd ever Victory Cup this time as the Madrid Thunder in Season 18.

Terence Fong Trophy (European Champions) - 3 times

S1, S2, S18

Vasteras made it to the finals in back to back seasons in S1 and S2 before taking a 16 season hiatus and finally returning in Season 18 as Madrid.

Scotty Campbell Trophy (MVP) - 1 Time

S8 - Mike Szatkowski - 74 G | 85 A | 159 P | +93

Mike Szatkowski is the only winner of the MVP Trophy in Vasteras history when he won in S8 with an outstanding 159 points.

Brett Slobodzian Trophy (Most Outstanding Player, as voted on by the members) - 0 Times

No player in Vasteras history so far has won the Brett Slobodzian Trophy.

Daisuke Kanou Trophy (Playoff MVP) - 1 Time

S1 - Matthew Pogge - 8 W | 3 L | 0 OTL | 2.61 G.A.A | .917 SV%

Pogge's star shined brightest in Season 1 when they won the Championship and he was named playoff MVP with a .917 SV% which at this high scoring era was amazing.

Mike Szatkowski Trophy (Top Point Scorer) - 2 Times

S2 - Scotty Campbell - 161 Points

S8 - Mike Szatkowski - 159 Points

The namesake Szatkowski was able to win the trophy in Season 8 which followed up Campbell's win in S2.

Kevin Brooks Trophy (Top Goal Scorer) - 2 Times

S2 - Scotty Campbell - 79 Goals

S8 - Mike Szatkowski - 74 Goals

Scotty Campbell won the Brooks Trophy in S2 with 79 goals and Szatkowski almost duplicated the act with 74 goals of his own winning in S8. By duplicating, I mean he almost matched his goals.

Alexander Beketov Trophy (Top Assists) - 4 Times

S2- Jonathan McKelvie - 83 Assists

S7 - Brennan Anthony - 100 Assists

S8 - Alexander Beketov - 97 Assists

S18 - David Henman - 97 Assists

This trophy has been won by this franchise quite a bit and it started in S2 with McKelvie who had 83 assists. In s7/S8 Anthony won followed by the namesake Beketov. In season 18, David Henman won with 97 assists as well.

Sterling Labatte Trophy (Top Defenseman) - 1 Time

S18 - David Henman - 36 G | 97 A | 133 P | +82 | 91 H | 118 SB

Henman kept the Vasteras/Madrid franchise from getting shut out with his win in S18 when he had an amazing 133 points from the back end.

Aidan Shaw Trophy (Top Goaltender) - 3 Times

S1 - Matthew Pogge - 46 W | 14 L | 4 OTL | 2.30 G.A.A | .901 SV% | 4 SO

S3 - Matthew Pogge - 45 W | 18 L | 9 OTL | 2.43 G.A.A | .912 SV% | 5 SO

S18 - Zach Voss - 50 W | 9 L | 4 OTL | 2.01 G.A.A | .925 SV% | 9 SO

We start to see why Pogge was won of the best goalies in the VHL's early days as he won the Shaw in S1 and S3 putting up some great stats in the VHL's most offensive era. Voss was able to add a 3rd to Vasteras' cabinet with a 50 win season in S18.

Scott Boulet Trophy (Best Defensive Forward) - 2 Times

S3 - Matt Defosse - 64 G | 60 A | 124 P | +67 | 110 H | 36 SB

S8 - Matt Defosse - 32 G | 38 A | 70 P | +7 | 104 H | 43 SB

Matt Defosse was able to win the first two Boulet Trophies in Vasteras Franchise history in S3 and S8. When he first won in S3 he had a very offensive season with 124 points and when he won in S8 he still put up some good stats in with 70 points. It remidns me of Steve Yzerman in his younger days and then in the later days.

Christian Stolzschweiger Trophy (Top Rookie) - 2 Times

S5 - Jochen Walser - 18 G | 52 A | 70 P | -23

S15 - Marek Schultz - 41 G | 44 A | 85 P | -15

Walser was able to win the Stolzy in S5 with a 70 point performance and 10 seasons later Marek Schultz won with 85 points.

David Knight Trophy (Top GM) - 0 Times

N/A

The Knight Trophy has never called Vasteras home so far throughout the first 19 seasons.

Grimm Jonsson Trophy (Top Leader) - 2 Times

S1 - Scotty Campbell

S18 - David Henman

The Grimm Jonsson was home to Toronto 2 times as Campbell would win it in S1 followed by David Henman in S18.

Mikka Virkkunen Trophy (Most Sportsmanlike Player) - 4 Times

S1 - Scotty Campbell

S11 - Kevin Brooks

S13 - Matt Fletcher

S18 - Mason Dixon

Scotty Campbell won this award for the first time in S1 followed by Brooks in S11 and Fletcher in S13. Dixon won the trophy in Madrid in Season 18.

Trophy Total: 30

Vasteras IK have won 30 trophies in 19 seasons. They will be always remembered as the first ever VHL Champions and will always have people cry to bring them back. Maybe one day it will happen.

Calgary Wranglers

HC Davos Dynamo

Helsinki Titans

New York Americans

Riga Reign

why did people hate vasteras tho

Probably because of they were cursed. They won in s1 beating Calgary who had lost only 3 games all season and then proceeded to not have another cup until S26

which is silly because New York was obviously more shitty than Vasteras

They were sure but they just didn’t really feel that way, probably because at least there was some excitement around them after the short bus era. Vasteras didn’t really improve any.

Right and then New York took off tho in S28 and on.  That’s when people really started laying into Vasty.
