Be advised of the new salary thresholds for traded players in the VHL. These numbers are proportionally identical to the old thresholds, just updated to fit a 12-team schedule.

The team trading for a player is required to pay the percentage corresponding to the current game number:

  • 100% - off-season - Game 65
  • 85% - Game 66 - 160
  • 70% - Game 161 - 260
  • 60% - Game 261 - ~325 (75% of the season)

6.4 – Trading Salaries
When trading contracts, teams essentially pay whatever is left on the player's salary. The amount of salary taken on by a team at different points of the season and off-season are split into 4 groups. The team trading for the player is required to pay the following:

  • 100% - off-season - Game 65
  • 85% - Game 66 - 160
  • 70% - Game 161 - 260
  • 60% - Game 261 - ~325 (75% of the season; number not always correct)

The team trading away the player is required to pay the % of the salary not taken on by the team trading for the player.

If a team trades for a player who has already been traded during the season, they pay the percentage of the original salary. For example:

Phil Rafter earns $5 000 000. Davos trades him to Hamilton at Game 160. Hamilton pay 70% of his salary, Davos pays 30%. Then for some reason Madrid decides he's a good player and trades for him too, from Hamilton, at Game 210. They don't pay 60% of the 70%, but 60% of the original $5mil salary. Hamilton pays whatever's left over. So, to summarize:

Davos pays 30%: $1 500 000
Hamilton pays 10%: $500 000
Madrid pays 60%: $3 000 000

if i understand this right.......seems like something that should be in the case of retained salary. it's kinda fucked if you trade a big contract but still get hooked for like 30-40% of it and you dont even have that player

If a team is offloading cap it’s likely they would do it in the offseason and pay 0% of it.

This rule is more for the team holding a player and trading them midway through the season as a rental. And in that case it would actually be more advantageous for you to want to take MORE than the 30-40% cap as it would make the trade value higher..
