Another Go at the Draft

Brock Waldron is going to be the seventh player I've taken through the wonderful spectacle known as the VHL Entry Draft.  A few of the players I've made have had pretty decent careers, but more often than not they've been a sputtering calamity that ended up (rightfully) getting overlooked and dropping well past the first round.  With that lucky seventh draft coming up very soon, I thought I'd take a look at what happened in the draft on my first six go-rounds and see if I deserved to go where I did, and if not where I should have gone.

Season 7 - G Jeff Hunter

Drafted by the Calgary Wranglers in the Third Round (20th Overall)

Picked Behind: Layken Heidt, Torsten Schwarz, Anton Ingberg, Jonathan Matthias

Picked Ahead Of: Scotty Campbell (Not That Scotty Campbell)

Hunter was my first stab at relevancy in the VHL, but I was tied up in plenty of other things at the time and didn't really see this league lasting a long while (yeah, missed the boat on that one).  I was also behind in development compared to some of the second-gen goalies at the time, and if I remember correctly Calgary had a goalie in place and picked me up as a project.  Needless to say, Hunter's career went nowhere aside from a decent spell in the VHLM, and he ended up auto-retiring after eight inglorious seasons.

Jeff Hunter was picked (lower than/higher than/right where) he should have been.

Season 16 - C Alex Stoyanovich

Drafted by the Helsinki Titans in the First Round (8th Overall)

Picked Behind: Demetrjusz Dudek, Ryan Walls, Xavier Martinez

Picked Ahead Of: Jardy Bunclewirth, Scott Boulet (Not That Scott Boulet)

After Hunter's ignominious career came to a close, Alex Stoyanovich brought his presence to the VHL.  The 5'5" center had a pretty solid career, finishing right around a point-per-game for his career.  He only topped thirty goals once, but was a great presence in the faceoff circle and assist column.  Of course, since I had already had a player and bailed, the GMs were a little wary of spending a first-round pick on me, opting instead to pick players like Ondrej Skokan Jr., Janelle Henley, and Hiro Renomitsu.  Matt Bailey eventually picked me at the end of the first round, but I ended up getting rushed into the VHL and saw my development stunted a bit.  Stoyanovich also spent a few seasons in Riga before finishing his career on a failed title run in Seattle.  In the end, he was better than the average VHL player, but not by a whole lot.

Season 22 - D Clint Guite

Drafted by Vasteras IK in the First Round (1st Overall)

Picked Behind: Nobody

Picked Ahead Of: Jeff Dar, Matthew Boragina

The Season 22 Draft is considered to be one of the worst in VHL history, and for good reason.  I was pretty much the only player worth a damn going into the draft, and even I didn't pan out to the extent that I should have.  Guite finished with 538 TPE, if I remember correctly, but I went inactive before he even hit depreciation.  Guite was moved to Toronto in his prime so I could take over as GM of the Legion, but that ended up being a failure, and I didn't really have the time or patience to be a GM on the VHL level.  I passed the Gm title on and drifted away from the VHL for a while.  I do know that Guite was a part of the Vasteras squad that broke their cup curse, so I can least hang my hat on that for his career, but it really could have been much better.  The only real saving grace is that this draft didn't produce much at all, although Dar and Boragina had pretty solid careers.

Clint Guite was picked (lower than/higher than/right where) he should have been.  It could really go either way.

At the halfway mark of my walk down my own little VHL memory lane, I'll take a break here.  Next week, I'll look at the other three players I've contributed to VHL history...they weren't very good.

711 words. This was a nice article. You certainly have an interesting past in this league and I look forward to reading about the rest of it in your next edition. Let's hope Waldron ends up being your best player yet, especially since you're more than likely going to be playing with me on Yukon. ;)

Grammar: 2/2

Really good, just found one small thing:

the time, and if I remember correctly Calgary = the time and, if I remember correctly, Calgary

Appearance: 1/1

Looks good. Not a big fan of that font, but that's personal preference.

Overall: 6/6
