Blueliners Destined For the HOF?

Hello and welcome to this MSFL Times Theme Week Special Report. Tonight, we'll be discussing two defensemen of the current generation, and whether or not the author feels they are destined for immortality in the Victory Hockey League Hall of Fame.

I'm talking, of course, about Smitty Werbenjagermanjensen and Joseph McWolf. Both have won the coveted Sterling Labatte Trophy, the award given to the VHL's top defenseman, twice. In fact, since the trophy was restored to its roots in Season 63, they're the only two to do so. Both Werbenjagermanjensen and McWolf have won the Alexander Valiq Trophy as the VHL's top offensive defenseman as well, although only Werbenjagermanjensen has won the Jake Wylde Trophy as the VHL's top defensive defenseman. Certainly Hall of Fame-worthy hardware, although neither has lifted the Continental Cup yet.

When it comes to statistical output, the two differ slightly. Joseph McWolf has prided himself as a model of consistency, as he has never finished a season below 50 assists, 60 points, 200 hits and 100 shots blocked. Werbenjagermanjensen started out a little slower, but broke out in his last season in Davos before signing with Moscow in free agency, where he really exploded. He has scored over 80 points in the past two seasons and is on pace to do it again, with the potential to rack up some serious hardware in the process. While McWolf is wrapping up a storied career, Werbenjagermanjensen is currently the premiere defenseman of the VHL.

When you bring up Smitty Werbenjagermanjensen and Joseph McWolf, there's a lot of comparisons to be made. Both have been excellent assets to their team on both ends of the ice and both have been positive members of the VHL itself. When you think of a defenseman from this era of the league, chances are pretty good it's going to be one of these two, which says a lot about how good they've been. When it's all said and done, I believe both of them will be enshrined in the Hall of Fame.
