Duncan Idaho - Junior Review

Do not read if you still wish to read the original Dune book ;)

Spoiler

Originally a swordmaster, hockey is not the first thing that comes to mind when people hear about Duncan Idaho. But hockey is certainly a sport the young player could excel at. He doesn’t shy away from physical combat as this was vital at his training at Ginaz. But after completing his training as a swordmaster, he did not return to his old team, the Harkonnen Barons. While talking to other people during his training he found out that the team of House Atreides, the Dukes, had a different management style then he was used too on his home planet of Giedi Prime. The Atreides Dukes are more managed by loyalty instead of fear and punishment as used by the Barons. His physical playstyle complemented the more disciplined style of play of the Atreides and he served more of a protector to the more smaller and agile players on the ice.

While playing for the Dukes, he became the teams enforcer, mainly since a pure enforcer did not exist on the team. But this did not stop Idaho from improving his actual hockey play as he became a skilled forward with more potential then just slamming bodies into the boards. On the Atreides Barons, Idaho was quickly instructed to keep an extra eye out on Paul Atreides, the future Duke of the House and due to that he followed him around to wherever he would play next. The House their political influence reached far enough to actually influence the hockey teams in the universal hockey league.

So while the story of how the Arrakis Desert Mice won their first tournament was already known (feel free to read Mr Hatter junior’s review for this), we do not known yet how the story would continue for Duncan and Paul. The victory of the Desert Mouse asked for more and they got hungry for more titles. So they decided to stick around. Duncan was named by House Atreides as their Fremen ambassador and they hoped to gain an advantage over the Harkonnen this way, making sure the Barons would not get new players on their team the next season, and keeping the Fremen on the planet Arrakis while playing with Paul and Duncan. The success of the Desert Mice unfortunately did not go unnoticed and the Emperor decided to cooperate with the Harkonnen to keep their success limited. While under attack during a training camp, the Sardaukar came in to assassinate the Desert Mice players. By killing nineteen of them Duncan managed to save Paul. After this attack Paul decided to leave the Desert Mice era behind him and signed both himself and Duncan up for the Victory Hockey League, in which they are now playing as rentals for the San Diego Marlins.
