  2. The Turku Outlaws and Their Depth After the Distribution Draft, the Turku Outlaws were set to become a team to fear in the VHLM. With a stacked defense and some great forwards at hand, they were ready to fire on all cylinders. Everybody who watches Turku all know what they have on their roster and that they are everything but set to go for the championship. All that needs to come is consistency. Most of these players have never played together before, but with time they sure have gelled. Through the first 54 games, they are 34-17-3 and sit 3rd in their conference. ----------------------- Players on the Outlaws look on after a loss ----------------------- Although through 54 games, the Outlaws at times still seem as though they are more just a bunch of skilled players than a real team. A perfect example of that is the top line of Vincenzo Valentini and Azi Ali who are centered by the raising star Travis Boychuk. They all seem to score at their own pace, and anyone who has watched the Outlaws play have seen how often one will get points while their line mates do not. Most of the time, when Boychuk is in on a goal, Ali is nowhere to be seen, and vice versa. When you have a superstar like Vojczek Svoboda on your team though, he piles on the assists himself with 76 on the season thus far. A surprising stat at this point of the season, is Vincenzo Valentini on the top line with only 21 points. A respectable output for sure, but when compared to his line mates it is something to think about. Boychuk has 58 points, and Ali has 60 on that same line and we expect them both to continue their production. The Outlaws are a strong team depth wise and it is not hard to see that every line can produce. The struggles of singled out players are not something to worry too much about, when the rest of the team can fill in the gaps easily. It had taken them awhile to find their starting goaltender, going through some ups and downs in the beginning of the season. Brock Waldron has come through as the current number one and with some hard work he should get better. With the Outlaws high flying defence core, one can assume that they give up some odd man chances. Waldron has had his own struggles but Turku hopes for him to be solid down the stretch and come playoff time. ------------------------------ Travis Boychuk and Dexter Morgan celebrate a goal ------------------------------ On the back end, there is something special in Turku that have jerseys flying off the shelves. The top 3 producers on the Outlaws are all defensemen. Vojczek Svoboda, Jake Wylde, and Dimothenis Vlasis are the 1-2-3 punch that have produced throughout the whole season so far. They jump into plays nearly every shift, which is scary for defending when you are the opposing team. If you are a team who can switch up the plays like that, you can easily confuse your opponent and find scoring chances. At the rate they are going, it does not look like any forward on the roster will catch them by season's end. GP G A P Vojczek Svoboda 54 19 76 95 Jake Wylde 54 29 40 69 Dimothenis Vlasis 54 26 40 66 With such depth and skill throughout the whole Turku Outlaws roster, it is wise to consider them a good shot for the championship. They have great depth at every position. Even the second line has performed admirably, with Dexter Morgan and Mikael Svensson scoring at the same pace as the top line. Every coach will have to question who they throw out to defend which lines, and it will be fun to watch Turku as they play down the stretch towards the playoffs. -------------------------- Brock Waldron looks on with his teammates as a shot goes wide -------------------------- There are some very strong teams this year, and nobody is truly considered to be a gimme to win it all. With around 20 games left, the race towards the playoffs will definitely be interesting. If any team can go on a streak, it will be hard to doubt what they can achieve. The Turku Outlaws are hoping for that team to be them.

  6. In-Depth Interview With Centerman Travis Boychuk We are currently 37 games into the season in the VHLM, and it has been a very interesting season at that. One team has received a ton of attention since the draft because of the number of picks they had for it. That team is the Turku Outlaws. The Outlaws had a good amount of additions in the draft, and everyone knew heading into the season that Turku would be one of the main clubs to watch. One player in general has received great deal of focus this season, as many scouts had looked into him after his year in Ottawa with the Lynx. He was acquired in the Dispersal Draft at 8th overall by the VHL's Calgary Wranglers, and with that came a lot of pressure. That player is Travis Boychuk, the 1st line center for Turku. As soon as he dawned the green jersey, he made a quick impression to his teammates. At the 37 game mark, he currently leads the team's forwards in points with 44 respectively. 19 of those points are goals. Interestingly enough, he sits 4th in points for the Outlaws, who's first 3 leaders are defencemen. This far into the season, we approached Boychuk on his thoughts towards his team and his personal progress in the season. He managed to find some time to answer some questions: Interviewer: First thing's first, I would like to ask you how you feel about the team's progress? Travis Boychuk: I think we are doing great. We had a bit of a rough patch a week ago but we have picked things up as of late. I believe we are what? 8-1-1 in our last 10? Yeah, I think that's it. I've never seen such offensively minded defenders on any team I have been on. Vojczek Svoboda is truly a superstar, especially. The league is very competitive this year. -------------------------------------- Interviewer: We have noticed since we interviewed you last, that you have gotten better at face offs. How much have you worked on that? Travis Boychuk: I have worked on it every day. Last year with the Lynx, my coach and I did not feel I was performing up to par in the face off circle. I have focused on that plenty since the off-season and I feel a lot more comfortable in the position. It has definitely been exhausting working on it all the time. Hard work pays off though. ---------------------------------------- Interviewer: How do you feel with all the success your team is having compared to last year in Ottawa? Travis Boychuk: In Ottawa, it was a process. As much as I wanted the team to do well, it was a great experience to have and it gave me time to work on my game. I had nothing but good times on the Lynx, and I loved my teammates. Here in Turku, it is obviously a different atmosphere. People expect a lot more out of you and there is more media attention. I do not mind it at all. I am glad to be on a competitor like the Outlaws and I believe we can achieve great heights. I have not forgotten about my Lynx team though, as I still keep in contact with Konstantin Azhishchenkov! ------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------ Interviewer: Not everyone knew what to expect out of you on a team with so much depth, and being on the top line. Last year, you played in the shadow of Konstantin Azhishchenkov. What is it like in Turku? Travis Boychuk: Yeah, on the Outlaws it was a different story than it is here. I was playing my first year in the minors over there and nobody expected much besides myself. I was just trying to make a name for myself. Here on my current team, I am on the top line. People expect me to make a nice pass or to score on my own. The fans are cheering when I carry the puck, and it is very nice to hear. Obviously, I technically still do play in the shadow of Svoboda. He can be a forward if he wanted to. I try my best here to live up to the expectations. It has been a fun ride so far. ---------------------------------------------- Interviewer: Any final words to say to the readers? Travis Boychuk: Keep watching the Turku Outlaws. We have a magical team this year and we love to hear what the fans think. I will keep trying my very best to perform day in and out. There is still another half of a season left, and plenty of hockey to watch. ------------------------------------------------ There you have it. That concludes our insider interview with star centerman Travis Boychuk of the Turku Outlaws. We can only look ahead to the rest of the season in Turku, and the excitement he may one day bring to Calgary in the VHL.
  7. OUTLAWS!! My linemate is having a great season. Here's to more points between us both!
  8. I would like a new sig to show my Turku Outlaws colours please. Preferably Nichushkin of the Dallas Stars render with a Turku logo edited over the Stars one? I wanted it to be #23 like me, but that's Kevin Connauton. I'd rather it be a forward, so #43 works wonders. Travis Boychuk Turku Outlaws

  11. Travis Boychuk One-On-One We are 20 games into the season here in the VHLM, and the Turku Outlaws have had their ups and downs so far in the league. With all of the talent on that team, it is finding to be difficult for any player to outshine the others. Besides Vojczek Svoboda, there are over five players in the same point-range on the club. Travis Boychuk on one hand, is in the pack with his teammates at a similar point level. He sits tied for 3rd in scoring on the Outlaws with 2 other players, 1 point behind 2nd and 1 point ahead of 4th. Scoring depth definitely is not a bad thing. We approached Mr. Boychuk and asked him about his current situation and his thoughts about himself: " I definitely think this team is capable of doing better. We have a solid group of guys here and every is chipping in. For myself, I want to produce even more. I really want to lead this team the way that I believe I can. We are only 20 games in though, and there is a long way to go before the playoffs. I've been working on getting stronger on the puck, and that will obviously make be a better centerman. It is nice that the team as a whole is starting to gel. " There you have it. We look forward to watching the rest of the Outlaws' season.
  12. I only wrote TB because I thought it might sound cool as a nickname. I wasn't taking any shortcuts. I also would have written 500+ words if I knew I would get deducted points. I can easily whip out more sentences. I just thought oh, 450 is the requirement....so I should be fine. Damnit...I knew it wasn't a Distribution Draft. LOL.
  13. Travis Boychuk's Development We are now 15 games into the VHLM season, and the star studded Turku Outlaws have a lot to hope for. With the Distribution Draft in the off-season, they added a variety of depth and stacked their team with known players from the M. The Outlaws have started with a record of 10-4-2, which might seem a little surprising to some. They need to get their chemistry in check in order to gain consistency on all levels. ----------------------------------------- ----------------------------------------- Travis Boychuk is one of their star forwards, and with that they expect a lot from him. Over the course of the season they hope he can bring much success to the team. In the 15 games played, he has 9 goals and 10 assists for 19 points. That is pretty good for a player thrown into a bigger role than he had in his previous year. Most people expect he will only get better as time goes on. Last year, Boychuk was mainly a winger alongside a bigger star. For this season he has stepped back into the role that brought him to the VHLM in the first place. In the faceoff circle he has won 54.52% of the draws, and that is great for a guy who was struggling at the start of the season. He managed to get back on pace to what people expect from him on face offs. Throughout the season so far, TB has been a little inconsistent. He has had some off games where he obtained 0 points, although playing well. When he is on his game though, he is a threat to stay aware of. Over the past 4 games he has 7 points with 3 goals, so it will be interesting to see what happens this week with his progress. He remains 3rd in scoring on the Outlaws but he wants to be at the top, and he has a lot of time to do just that. Travis Boychuk's biggest question is consistency, and he knows it. If he wants to turn into the superstar he believes he can be, he needs to distribute points night in and night out. The Outlaws as a team have not been as dominant as some have expected, but they have no trouble scoring. Lucky for them, their success does not lie on only one line. Every line has been contributing in a big way, and if one is not scoring the other one is. Depth will be a large factor in the season. For the rest of the season, the fans and GMs watching Travis Boychuk and the Outlaws could expect big things. Boychuk is only getting better and better, and if he keeps producing he will gain even more confidence and score even more. The season that remains will be an exciting one, that's for sure.
