  1. With the summer of the Edmonton Oilers making it look like it'll be another year fighting for the top of the draft lottery, TSN 1260 will be doing a monthly spotlight on the VHLM. This month we caught up with Ottawa Lynx rookie Dan Wilinsky, who is in preparation for the upcoming season and next years VHL draft.

Good afternoon Dan, and thanks for joining us. Well get right into it. How's the summer gone so far? It's been a pretty whirlwind summer with winning the Memorial Cup, signing with Ottawa and skipping the NHL draft. Have you had a chance to relax? Or has it been all pedal to the metal?

Thanks for having me. It has been a pretty wild summer. Winning the Mem Cup was amazing. We had a great team this year and everything seemed to click for us down the stretch. I'm very thankful to win that in my final year.

There really hasn't been much time for much else. The family managed to go to Canmore for a few days and tour around a little, but that's been about all.

As for the NHL draft and signing with Ottawa, it was a tough decision but with the another possible lockout coming up I didn't feel it was a smart call on my part to get caught in that being so early in my pro career. I felt it would have really stunted my development and hurt me going forward. Ottawa's management team came up to me about a week ago with a great offer for this season and an awesome plan for what the team wants to accomplish this year, so it was hard to turn down. We're definitely set up for a successful season and I know were all chomping at the bit to get started.

With that, how's camp gone with the Lynx? You missed the draft and were late getting started. Has that affected anything?

Camp has been great so far. Its a fun bunch to be around, and it makes working hard easy with such a good group. I'm not too worried about missing a bit of time yet. I was working out with the Raiders rookies back in Prince Albert, so I was still on the ice every day. It's been an easy transition to being in Ottawa. The coaches, staff and really everyone has been very welcoming and helping getting me up to speed on what we want to accomplish here and the great history of the franchise.

Sounds like you've got a great setup in Ottawa. What are your personal expectations for the year?

I've never been a big fan of concrete expectations for myself because the team has to come first. So far though I've clicked real well with my new linemates, I just hope to be able to contribute every night. Although scoring 30 or 40 goals is never a bad thing!

Well hopefully it's another great year for you, and for the Lynx. We'll be watching once the Oilers are out of the playoffs by Halloween. Thanks again and we look forward to having you on again!

    POSITION

    RIGHT WING

    SHOOTS

    LEFT

    JUNIOR TEAM

    PRINCE ALBERT (WHL)

AFTER COMPLETING A MEMORIAL CUP CHAMPIONSHIP IN HIS 17 YEAR OLD SEASON WITH THE PRINCE ALBERT RAIDERS, DAN WILINSKY, SIGNED A MINOR PRO DEAL WITH THE OTTAWA LYNX. HE DECIDED TO SKIP THE NHL DRAFT AND PURSUE HIS HOCKEY DREAMS WITH THE UPSTART VHL. HIS SIGNING CAUSED LITTLE FAN FARE, BUT DAN HAS ALWAYS BEEN AN UNDERDOG. HE HOPES TO HAVE A SOLID SEASON IN A DEPTH ROLE ON A STACKED LYNX TEAM TO HELP HIS DRAFT STOCK FOR THE VHL DRAFT NEXT SEASON.

    PROS

WILINSKY IS GIFTED WITH AN ELITE LEVEL SHOT, THAT HE ADMITS WORKING ON, IN HIS PARENTS BASEMENT. ACCORDING TO HIS FAMILY THE CLOTHES DRYERS HAVE A VERY DANGEROUS EXISTENCE AND NOT A LONG LIFESPAN. HE OFTEN OVER MATCHED COMPETITION WITH THE ACCURACY AND POWER IN HIS RELEASE. COMPARABLE: JOHN LECLAIR

GROWING UP, DAN HAS ALWAYS BEEN THE BEST AND FASTEST SKATER ON HIS CLUBS. ENTERING INTO THE VHLM, HE WILL FIND HIS SPEED WILL HAVE TO BE MORE OF A WEAPON AND WORK ON IT EVEN HARDER AS HE NO LONGER WILL BE ABLE TO SKATE HIS WAY OUT OF TROUBLE. DAN GETS TO TOP SPEED IN NO MORE THAN 3 STRIDES AND GIVES OPPOSING DEFENDERS FITS WHEN HE GETS GOING THROUGH THE NEUTRAL ZONE. COMPARABLE: MIKE MODANO

EVER SEEN A PLAYER STICK HANDLE IN AN ACTUAL PHONE BOOTH. DAN CAN. AND HE CAN MAKE IT LOOK EASY. MORE THAN A FEW OPPONENTS HAVE FOUND THEMSELVES TIED UP IN KNOTS TRYING TO KEEP AN EYE ON THE PUCK, WHEN WILINSKY STARTS TO DANGLE. COMPARABLE: PAVEL BURE

    CONS

DISCIPLINE, DISCIPLINE, DISCIPLINE. THAT SEEMS TO BE A WORD DAN CANT GET HIS HEAD AROUND. ITS ALMOST AS THOUGH HE CANT HEAR THE WHISTLE AND CONTINUTES WITH THE ROUGH STUFF. HE NEEDS TO WORK ON NOT LETTING OPPONENTS GET UNDER HIS SKIN, AND TAKE HIS FOCUS OFF HIS OFFENSIVE ABILITIES

I DO REALLY BELIEVE DAN HAS NO IDEA OF HIS OWN END OF THE ICE. SOMETHING HE WILL DESPERATELY NEED TO WORK ON AT THE PRO LEVEL. NOT ONE TO VENTURE PAST HIS OWN FACEOFF CIRCLES, HE SEEMS OVERMATCHED AND SOMETIMES UNWILLING TO PLAY DEFENCE.

HES STILL GROWING INTO HIS FRAME AND HIS STRENGTH WILL NEED SOME WORK AT THE NEXT LEVEL. DAN NEEDS TO FIND A GYM BUDDY AND MAKE THE TEAM FACILITIES HIS SECOND HOME. HE HAS A GOOD BUILD BUT JUST NEEDS TO WORK ON THAT ASPECT MORE. HES GOTTEN AWAY WITH IT SO FAR BUT PLAYING WITH GROWN MEN WILL CHANGE THAT.

    1. What do you think about getting your careers started with the Lynx?

I'm very excited to get back to playing hockey. Winning is very important to me and the Lynx are the best team in our league and I can't wait to get out there and win.

    2. Any preliminary opinions on which teams at the VHL level you might eventually want to play for? Any you'd rather avoid? If you don't know, that's fine

As a good northern Alberta boy I'll say ABC. Anybody but Calgary

    3. How are you looking to build your player? Stylistically, and/or players you're modeling after?

I'd like to model myself after mark messier. Hockey is a 200 foot game and you can't score unless you take care of your own end first.

    4. Long term goals? Cups, HOF, etc?

I want to win as many cups as possible and be remembered as a great teammate

    5. Member-wise: favorite hockey team?

    Oilers. Praise McJesus

Ahhh you must have seen my post that I did awhile ago! You can GM a team here aswell but the players are real players!

Ya I just looked and it was yours. I'll probably see how much time and effort it takes to manage just a player first before committing to  being a GM as well
