Name: Devin Gabella Position: Left Wing Current Team: Halifax 21st Age: 21 Height: 6’0” Weight: 185 lbs. Birthplace: Toledo, Ohio Preferred Number: 19 Nickname: Mr. Perfect Notes from Scouts “Gabella has great speed and shows little effort getting around the defense to get a breakaway, but he needs to improve on finishing his plays to produce more scoring.” “He is a great playmaker when it comes to the offensive zone, his passing is great, and he always knows where to be to set up plays for line mates.” “Devin is very mature for his role on the team, he likes to take on a leadership role and is great at motivating his team to push through tough games to come out on top with wins.” “He shows very great potential to be a great player in the VHL due to his drive and love for the game.” Pros Leadership: Devin shows great leadership skills because he has such a great passion for the game of hockey and wants nothing more than to win every game that he plays in. Some of his teammates don’t have the same passion that Devin has, he notices that and makes sure to pick their heads up and be a great leader because he believes if everyone on the team is in a great mood and enjoying the sport than they can mesh well and get wins. Passing: Another great skill that Devin possesses is his passing skills, this kid can make passes that an average player can not make. His line mates like to sit back door and Devin is just able to find holes in the defense and pass the puck to the C or RW and get them an easy backdoor goal. Positioning: Whenever you watch Devin play you pick up on his hockey knowledge quik. He has speed to get into great positioning quik and this allows him to always be open and available to receive a pass or get open to create lanes to the net to increase scoring opportunities. Speed: Devin’s speed is the best in the level of hockey he currently plays in. Everyone jokingly calls him the next Connor McDavid because he just blows past the defenders making them look like pylons. With this kid gets so many breakaways during his games, which allows him to have a lot of goals throughout his early career. Scoring: The reason his scoring is great is because of his speed, he gets so many breakaways that he gets what seems like an unlimited opportunity for scoring chances and he finishes often. Cons Physicality: One major thing that Devin needs to work on is his physicality, this will help with his defensive play when trying to knock the opposing team off the puck. He may be worried about getting hurt and ruining his chances in the VHL, so I think his great leadership skills make up for his lack of physicality, but if he went into more defensive zone battles and grew in that part of his game, I think he will be a dominate player. Defensive: These piggy backs off physicality, if Devin grows in that aspect of his play than his defensive game will increase his defensive play. He also sometimes sits to high in the defensive zone, hoping that his team gains control so he can get a head start on beating that defenseman to get an easy breakaway to hopefully score a goal.

Halifax is having a great season, they are currently sitting at a record of 34-13-3 (71pts) which put them ahead of the second place Minnesota Storm by 5 points. A couple players are contributing to the offensive success that Halifax has had like Basaraba Moose (D) (50GP – 23G – 40A – +18), Dimitri Volosenkov (LW) (50GP – 29G – 34A – +13), Julius Freeman (LW) (50GP – 22G – 41A – +21), and Teagan Glover (C) (50GP – 26G – 34A – +26). Halifax is currently sitting a goal differential of +57, which is better than Minnesota by 21 goals. If Halifax can overcome the challenges when facing top teams like Minnesota and Houston then they should be feeling great going into playoffs. I believe it will be important for management to develop new guys this late into the season to make sure they can help build depth in their line up for a deep run in the playoffs. Now looking into the future for after playoffs, it will be very important for them to make sure they can build a great team in the draft to try to repeat this same success next season.

1. Which aspect of your game needs the most improvement right now? I believe that my defensive game needs to be improved. I am a rookie and have only played two games so far with Haifax and I am sitting at a -2 rating which needs to improve. 2. Which team has been the toughest to play against this season? For me personally, I would say the Las Vegas Aces are the hardest for myself to play against. I only have two games under my belt and Las Vegas gave me the most trouble. 3. Which team has been the easiest to play against this season? Personally, it would be Saskatoon just for the purpose of only playing two games and I seemed to have more success there and as a team we played really well. 4. Are you satisfied with your performance this season, so far? So far with two games on a top team, I feel like I am contributing the best that I can. I am looking to improve tremendously to help build depth for the team moving towards playoffs. 5. Is there anyone that you look up to as a role-model, leader or mentor on the time this season? How do they inspire you to play your game? I look up to the AGM of Halifax, he has helped me a lot since I have arrived to Halifax. Allowing for a smooth transition into the VHLM and showing me what needs to be done weekly to develop as a player and contribute to Halifax. 6. Where do you see yourself 3 seasons from now? In three seasons I want to find myself in VHL, putting up points and contributing to the team for some wins.
