  7. Lukas Nykvist DOB: March 4 (18 Years Old) Hometown: Ornskoldsvik, Sweden Jersey Number: 21 5’11” 182lbs Grade: A- Potential: 8.5/10 Childhood: Lukas grew up playing on the pond in Ornskoldsvik, Sweden with his friends from around the neighbourhood. Bjorn and Adela, his parents, put him in skates at the young age of four. He used dad’s equipment to start, which was far too big, but he managed to put it to good use. He was always slightly more impressive than his friends and showed a glimmer in his eye every time he stepped on that frozen lake. His dad would light fires in the snowbank on the edge of the lake so that Lukas could stay out late to practice skating and shooting the puck. Considering the small size of the town and the quantity of the terrific professional hockey players to come out of the area, Nykvist had the opportunity to learn from some of the best Swedish players to be in the game. He would use small tips and tricks and work on his specific offensive skill set to be a proven scorer one day. At his young age, all of this early determination would prove to pay off in the short future. (Nykvist in the middle) Junior: In high school Nykvist jumped levels in hockey fast as he stuck out like a sore thumb. He played one year with Örnsköldsviks SK with 7 goals and 6 assists (13 points) in 14 games played. He accomplished this at 14 years old. When he turned 15, Nykvist joined the MODO junior under 20 squad where he put up an astonishing 43 goals and 35 assists (78 points) in only 33 games played. He went on to win his first competitive championship that year. And upon turning 16 he debuted the team MODO in the Swedish Hockey League. Along with joining MODO in the SHL he would return to the MODO junior squad to win back to back championships with his home town friends that he grew up on the ice with (as seen below.) This is when he really started to take flight. His statistics were at the upper portion of the SHL for three years with a total of 138 points in 112 games played. Keep in mind that he was 16 to 18 years old, playing in a league among men. SEASON TEAM GP G A PTS +/- 2011-12 MODO 32 24 13 37 +11 2012-13 MODO 39 30 21 51 +19 2013-14 MODO 41 36 24 60 +29 (Nykvist top row on the right) Upsides: Shooting: Lukas has a shot like no other. He has quick release and a velocity that can make you lose the puck in mid-sight. Goalies tremble in fear when the see him coming down bearing down the ice waiting to snap off his shot. Some scouts describe it as similar to Joe Sackic’s shot but instead with velocity of a slap shot. You have to see it to believe it. It is unnatural. Leadership: The leadership and maturity that this young man shows is remarkable. He is cool and calm in pressure situations, always giving his team the role model they need. He is an 18 years old going on 30. He knows how to pump his team up and keep them going at the right times. On the ice he shows the passion of a leader and has fantastic discipline. He reminds scouts of a late Nicklas Lidstrom. He will pipe up in the dressing room every game at the intermission, and he will constantly talk on the bench to his teammates and coaches to help everyone work together and be as successful as possible. Skating: Nykvist can skate fast. He can skate very, very fast. He skates smoothly around the ice and walks around almost every teams defence that he comes by. Turns tight corners fast and easy and can go from defence to offence in the blink of an eye and if he picks up a turnover chances are he is on a breakaway. He can get by quick along the boards and has an uncanny top-end speed down the middle of the ice. Serious consequences happen if the opponent can’t find a way to detain this skating and scoring machine. Downsides: Defence: The defensive ability is somewhat disappointing. He has much room to grow on this skill set. He lacks determination on the back-check and he sometimes convincingly turns the puck over when exiting the defensive zone. He is positionally sound in his own end but he makes some quick poor decisions following the puck instead of the player and attempting poke checks. He continues to learn in this area and adding this to his into his bag of tricks would make him one of the best overall two-way players. Passing: Nyquist is a greedy scoring player. It is not so much the passing itself, but the timing of the passing and actually dishing the biscuit away for an assist once in a while. He needs to learn to be a more opportunistic player with the puck and rely on both shooting and passing in the zone. When he has an opportunity to shoot the puck, he will. The majority of the time when a pass is better than a shot he will be more focused on putting the puck on the net. This also would be a genuine skill to appreciate and learn to do more as he advances into higher calibre leagues. Strength: Strength is something a player can build easily but Nykvist has never needed it until now. He has played in a faster paced and lesser hitting league in Sweden but many are afraid of that when he steps up to the big plate in the VHL he will not be able to hold his own. He has the speed to get around players and move with the pace of the game easily but when it comes to grinding in the corners he may get pushed around like a pit-bull playing with a shitzu. He will need to train hard in the off-seasons and add muscle to his 180 pound frame. Conclusion: Lukas Nykvist has offensive talent never before seen since the Great One. He has upsides that every team desires and has the potential to become a superstar. He will need to work on a few things along the way to ensure that he becomes that complete player in the VHL. He is determined and gifted and he has no doubt in his mind that he will be on our televisions for the long run and retire as a champion in the VHL.
  8. Yukon 2 gud (am I saying this right?) and my player has a +1!! Wheew!
  9. A Thank You Letter From Lukas Nykvist First and foremost I would like to thank the Yukon Rush for giving me the opportunity to join their organization at such a late time in the season. I am very excited to get this chance and I promise to all the fans I will be the best player I can be here. This team is already doing well I hope to contribute to the success and make this a season to remember. I have thought nothing short of winning the championship. This is my goal, and the teams goal. As we roll forward I will be playing on the wing. This gives me an opportunity to focus on my offensive skill and scoring more than my usual centre roll but I am very confident I will have an impact to this club. I would quickly like to thank everyone who has helped me on my way here and especially to my parents. Once again, thank you to the Yukon Rush and I look forward to be skating as soon as possible. Best Regards,
  10. Ohh okay I see I though it was some one complaining about us CDC originated people haha. There seems to be quite a few on here!
  11. Lukas Nyqvist DOB: March 4 (18 Years Old) Hometown: Ornskoldsvik, Sweden Jersey Number: 21 5’11” 182lbs Grade: A- Potential: 8.5/10 (Nykvist on bottom left.) Lukas never had a chance in the real world. As soon as he could walk his father Bjorn had him on skates and learning hockey in his backyard teaching him all he could about the game we all know and love while his mom, Adela, would cheer on in support on the sidelines and teach him to be a born leader at heart. With the idols of the local professional ice hockey talent, (Naslund, Forsberg, Daniel and Henrik Sedin, and Victor Hedman to mention a few), Lukas has always dreamed of being a top professional player and join the heights of stardom as his idols did. He has had the opportunity to meet and learn from his idols when they returned from the big league in the summers and they showed him at a young age the determination and effort needed to become an all star. Nykvist took off in the minor leagues out-performing everyone. He could show his talents even at the young age of 9 and everyone knew he was going to be special. And special he will be. Evaluation: Nykvist has exceptional skating and offensive talents. Each game in and out he shows up and you can rely on him to put up a few points on the board. His wrist shot release is lightning quick and his accuracy could shoot wherever he wants when he wants. Nykvist’s face-off’s are incomparable. His ability to control the play and open things up to create opportunities is similar to the Great One. Bottom line; he is a force to be reckoned with nigh in and night out. Luaks’ defensive capabilities are somewhat lacking. He is strong on the puck but can be out of place at times and can read the play the wrong way. He can give take hits and position himself good on his man but he will need to increase his stick checking ability and his desire to get the job done in his own teams zone. The scouts would say it is something to shy some teams away but in all reality this kid has room to grow and become a solid defensive player. It wouldn’t be one to worry much about his downsides. Stats (Swedish Hockey League): SEASON TEAM GP G A PTS +/- 2011-12 MODO 32 24 13 37 +11 2012-13 MODO 39 30 21 51 +19 2013-14 MODO 41 36 24 60 +29 He wasn’t known well worldwide until his amazing numbers in his years with MODO. His point totals seen above have broken records and shown that even at a young age entering a big boys league, he can perform at a considerable rate. In his final season with MODO, he produced an astonishing 36 goals in only 41 games with a total of 60 points and a plus 29 rating. He was the top leader in the league by a long shot. Without doubt, he has caught the eyes of hockey fans everywhere. There is no doubt that all eyes will be on this youngster when he steps up to the plate in the VHLM for the remainder of the season as he will be draft eligible for the next VHL season. Expect to see Nykvist in the top picks at the upcoming draft. (Nykvist on left.)
