Hal laPenneau sat down with newly-drafted Senor Physique to go over the VHLM draft and the first sixth of the season.
Before the draft, nobody had even heard of you. How does it feel to have been selected by the Wild so late in the draft?
--> It's unreal. I was in complete shock, and my family was too. I'm so grateful to the Wild for taking a chance on me in the 7th round and I'm eager to prove myself in the VHLM.
Did anything about being in the VHLM surprise you?
--> Of course, I was expecting much stiffer competition and I was absolutely correct. But what I'm most shocked about is the level of competitiveness, especially on the Wild. We are all driven to compete and to win; we have guys coming in early mornings just to shoot for hours on end, some who work out twice a day, and some who study game tapes late at night -- it's both intimidating and admiring at the same time. Also, Tony [Anthony Amberback] introduced me to Spudnuts [a local dessert] and I was blown away by how good they are! I gotta watch the carbs, though.

Just last night in the game against Philadelphia, you scored your first goals! Take us through how you were feeling.
--> I'm just so happy that I helped out the team on the scoresheet. I'm so excited! My first ever goals in the VHLM! I was nervous going into the second period down 2-1, but I knew that we had the fight to push back, and we did just that. Once the score was tied 3-3, I was proud that coach trusted me to go out on the Power Play. Fylo [Gibbles] passed the puck to me and I skated around a couple defenders before passing it back to him. Fylo took a shot and I crashed the net in case the goalie made the save. Lucky for us, the puck bounced around to me and I tapped it in. I was so relieved, not only to have not missed the open net, but also since the monkey was finally off my back.
Coach sent me out again on the Power Play in the third and our team really moved the puck well, but the defenders kept on staying in our shooting lane and they blocked many of our shots. I was getting a little frustrated, but Fylo's blocked shot came to me and I shot the puck in. When we put pucks to the net and give it 110%, good things happen!
All in all, I'm really excited that I helped the team out in a crucial moment.
How do you feel about the rest of the season?
--> I'm honestly thrilled. It's been a challenge to get used to the new league with bigger bodies and different systems but I'm enjoying myself. I just gotta keep on improving and keep helping out the team! Thanks Hal for having me.
